Description
What kind of wine it is
Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva is a red wine that enhances the qualities of Sangiovese in combination with Merlot. It appears an intense ruby red in the glass, revealing an aromatic bouquet characterised by scents of wild berries, undergrowth and delicate spicy notes. On the palate, it is structured and intense, offering a full-bodied and dry sip, supported by excellent freshness and a well-defined tannic structure. The finish, pleasantly juicy, confirms the elegance of this Tuscan blend. Its deep and complex profile also makes it ideal for long ageing.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from Castellina in Chianti, Tuscany, a region historically renowned for outstanding viticulture. The vineyards stretch at altitudes between 220 and 510 metres above sea level, where the soil consists of alberese and galestro, with a calcareous and clayey matrix rich in rocky fragments. These pedoclimatic conditions give the grapes great aromatic finesse and freshness. Since 1435, the Mazzei family has managed these lands following a sustainable agricultural philosophy, aimed at protecting water resources and enhancing native grape varieties while fully respecting the local identity.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a rigorous manual harvest, organised between the end of August and mid-September to accommodate the different ripening times of the grapes. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature and involves maceration on the skins for 15-18 days, essential for extracting colour and polyphenols. Subsequently, the wine matures in small French oak barrels, half of which are new, gaining greater softness and complexity. The process requires thirty-six months of total maturation, culminating in careful bottle ageing that perfects its full sensory balance.
History and Curiosities
The Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo pays tribute to the illustrious ancestor of the Mazzei family, author of the first historical document in which this prestigious denomination is mentioned. Produced at the Castello di Fonterutoli, in Tuscany, this wine embodies the wisdom of generations dedicated to viticulture since 1435. Through sustainable agricultural management, the estate masterfully enhances the elegance of Sangiovese and native grape varieties, offering a wine of great depth that combines a centuries-old heritage with the utmost respect for nature.

At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindfull of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.
"I like to think to our family tree as a sturdy and generous vine plant because all Mazzei's history is constantly connected to vineyards, cellars and wine." (Marchese Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro) Read more
