Description
What kind of wine it is
Contrada Volpare by Maugeri is an elegant Etna Bianco Superiore made from Carricante grapes. On the nose, it reveals a broad aromatic profile, characterised by notes of yellow-fleshed fruit, citrus, broom and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it expresses a truly volcanic character, with pronounced mineral tension and a refreshing acidity. The finish is persistent and offers elegant nuances of citron. Thanks to its lean and crisp structure, it pairs perfectly with seafood dishes, carpaccio and first courses such as spaghetti with clams.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Sicily, in the municipality of Milo, on the eastern slope of the volcano, the prime area for Etna Bianco Superiore. The vineyards, situated at around seven hundred metres above sea level, are cultivated as bush vines on small terraces bordered by the typical dry-stone walls made of lava stone. In this context of heroic viticulture, the sandy volcanic soil rich in minerals gives the wine a distinctive savouriness. Organic production ensures the utmost respect for the mountain environment and the integrity of the land.
How it is produced
Production begins with the manual harvesting of the Carricante grapes, followed by gentle pressing. The must undergoes a brief cryo-maceration and cold clarification to preserve its aromatic freshness. Fermentation takes place mainly in stainless steel, while a small portion matures in French oak barrels to enhance its complexity. The process concludes with ageing on fine lees for eight months, a technique that imparts structure and precision to the palate.
History and Curiosities
Born at 700 metres above sea level on the eastern slope of the volcano, Maugeri's Etna Bianco Superiore DOC embodies the essence of heroic viticulture. This organic wine made from Carricante grapes originates from seven hectares of bush-trained vines, carefully protected by dry-stone walls of lava stone. The Sicilian estate ensures complete traceability from the manual harvest at the beginning of October. Already awarded the Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso, this label expresses in the glass all the elegant identity of its territory.
