Description
What kind of wine it is
Villa dei Misteri is a red wine from Campania, specifically Pompeiano, crafted by Mastroberardino and the result of a meticulous blend of Aglianico, Piedirosso and Sciascinoso. In the glass, it reveals a ruby red colour, introducing a complex and broad aromatic profile. On the nose, there are spicy notes of vanilla and cinnamon, accompanied by aromas of red fruits such as morello cherry and plum, enriched by pronounced mineral nuances. On the palate, it is enveloping and balanced, supported by fine and elegant tannins. If carefully decanted, it pairs ideally with mature cheeses, grilled meats and truffle-based dishes.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from a project aimed at restoring ancient viticulture within the walls of the archaeological excavations of Pompeii. The vines grow fifty metres above sea level, with a southern exposure. The roots sink into a loose volcanic soil, well-drained and rich in lapilli, capable of imparting a distinct territorial character to the wine. For cultivation, the single stake vineyard system is used for the Piedirosso and Sciascinoso varieties, and the traditional bush vine training for Aglianico, respecting the natural vocation of the environment.
How it is produced
Production begins with manual harvesting, carried out between the end of September and the end of October. The classic red vinification involves prolonged maceration on the skins for about twenty-five days at a controlled temperature, encouraging optimal extraction of colour and aromatic components. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels for twenty-four months, defining the spicy character of the sip. This is followed by a long rest in the bottle for sixty months, a fundamental step in giving the wine its final structural balance.
History and Curiosities
Born from an ambitious project in the 1990s, Villa dei Misteri by Mastroberardino brings the ancient viticulture of Pompeii back to life. The vines grow on volcanic soils rich in lapilli, right among the famous Domus where they thrived two thousand years ago. The winery, active since 1878, has revived ancient methods to offer a Pompeiano IGT with millennia-old charm, capable of combining historical and cultural value with the authentic expression of the Campanian territory.
