Description

What kind of wine it is

Taurasi Radici Riserva is a full-bodied red wine by Mastroberardino, an expression of Aglianico. In the glass, it reveals a refined and complex aromatic profile, dominated by aromas of sour cherry, plum and wild berries, intertwined with hints of tobacco and balsamic notes. On the palate, it is enveloping and concentrated, supported by firm yet velvety tannins that ensure a long-lasting finish. The aftertaste closes with captivating notes of black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate, defining an age-worthy red capable of evolving masterfully over time. This wine represents a pure expression of the Campanian terroir, ideal for pairing with braised red meats and game.

Where it comes from

It originates in Montemarano, in the heart of Irpinia. The vineyards are located at 550 metres above sea level, with a south-eastern exposure. The vine roots delve into a distinctive clay-limestone soil characterised by a strong presence of stony skeleton. This particular geological formation, combined with the slow mountain ripening, gives the grapes a perfect balance of phenolic concentration, pronounced savouriness and excellent balanced freshness, all fundamental elements for the longevity of this great red wine.

How it is produced

The grapes are hand-harvested in the first ten days of November. In the winery, a classic red vinification takes place, featuring a temperature-controlled maceration on the skins for about eight or nine days. After alcoholic fermentation in steel, malolactic fermentation takes place entirely in wood. The maturation process continues for thirty months using a skilful combination of French oak barriques and Slavonian oak casks. The production cycle concludes with a lengthy final ageing of at least three years, a period necessary to develop the iconic complexity and austere character that distinguish this red.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1986 from a careful study of the Irpinian soils, the Taurasi Radici Riserva represents the highest expression of Aglianico. This prestigious label seals the winemaking heritage of the Mastroberardino family, who, since 1878 and through ten generations, have preserved the excellence of Campanian oenology. A perfect synthesis between territorial vocation and a tradition spanning over two centuries, the exceptional 2017 vintage has won over critics worldwide, receiving prestigious accolades from renowned names such as James Suckling, Decanter and Veronelli.

The Mastroberardino family has been involved in the socio-cultural context of winemaking for over two centuries, according to the most reliable historical reconstructions. The first traces of their presence in Irpinia date back to the Bourbon land registry, in the mid- eighteenth century , when the family chose the village of Atripalda as their headquarters, where the ancient cellars are still located, and from there a lineage began that inextricably linked its fortunes to the cult of wine.

Ten generations have since then run the family business, amidst alternating fortunes, as always happens in the histories of long-standing family businesses.

This majestic Taurasi pairs perfectly with braised red meats, rich slow-cooked ragù and game. The harmony of its velvety tannins marries beautifully with first courses enhanced by truffles and porcini mushrooms, or with the intensity of mature cheeses. To fully appreciate its elegant complexity, it is recommended to serve at 18°C after decanting for one hour.
