Description

What kind of wine it is

Naturalis Historia Taurasi Riserva by Mastroberardino is a still red wine made from Aglianico grapes. It expresses the identity of Taurasi with a sensory profile designed for long ageing. With an intense ruby colour, it reveals a bouquet of violet, wild blackberry, chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, it is enveloping, supported by a remarkable structure that enhances notes of black cherry, plum and spices. Its persistence makes it perfect for pairing with mature cheeses, pasta with ragù, truffle, red meats and game.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Mirabella Eclano, in Irpinia, from old vineyards over forty years old. The altitude of four hundred metres and the south-east exposure favour slow ripening and optimal aromatic definition. The vineyards grow on volcanic soil of sandy-loam nature, with traces of limestone and clay ensuring a solid framework. The organic and sustainable agricultural management uses the espalier training system with spur pruning to maintain low yields, enhancing the quality of the bunches.

How it is produced

Production begins at the end of October with a meticulous manual harvest. Traditional red vinification involves prolonged maceration on the skins at controlled temperature for optimal phenolic extraction. The wine matures for twenty-four months in French oak barrels, softening the tannic texture and integrating elegant nuances. The final bottle ageing of thirty months refines a warm and deep sip, ideal for enhancing slow-cooked meats and rich charcuterie boards.

History and Curiosities

The Naturalis Historia Taurasi Riserva 2017 celebrates ancient Irpinia, originating from vines over 40 years old located on the Mirabella Eclano estate. This long-lived and majestic red reflects the centuries-old tradition of Mastroberardino and the soul of a land that Virgil described as rich in mysteries. Its unparalleled structure evolves thanks to 24 months of ageing in French barriques and a further 30 months in the bottle. Praised by international critics, including James Suckling, it reveals itself as an enveloping pure Aglianico of extraordinary prestige.

The Mastroberardino family has been involved in the socio-cultural context of winemaking for over two centuries, according to the most reliable historical reconstructions. The first traces of their presence in Irpinia date back to the Bourbon land registry, in the mid- eighteenth century , when the family chose the village of Atripalda as their headquarters, where the ancient cellars are still located, and from there a lineage began that inextricably linked its fortunes to the cult of wine.

Ten generations have since then run the family business, amidst alternating fortunes, as always happens in the histories of long-standing family businesses.
