Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Massolino is a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of Nebbiolo grown in the heart of the Langhe. It displays a garnet red colour and an aromatic profile characterised by elegant notes of rose, cherry and liquorice, enriched with hints of spices, undergrowth and subtle nuances of smoke and truffle. On the palate, it offers a structured sip, balanced by well-judged acidity and velvety tannins that lead to a persistent finish. This solid flavour structure ensures the wine has remarkable longevity, allowing it to evolve beautifully over the years.
Where it comes from
The grapes come mainly from the vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba and, in part, from Castiglione Falletto, within the renowned Barolo area. The vineyards thrive between 320 and 360 metres above sea level, where the wine’s strength derives from the calcareous-marl soil rich in clay, essential for giving Nebbiolo a solid tannic framework. Massolino, a winery rooted in these hills since 1896, carefully selects fruit from various subzones to impart profound complexity to the wine and maintain a precise stylistic consistency that faithfully reflects the identity of the region.
How it is produced
The process begins with a meticulous manual harvest. Fermentation and maceration on the skins take place in steel or cement vats for about two weeks at a controlled temperature. The wine then matures for a long period in oak barrels, an essential step to stabilise the structure and soften the tannic texture. The process concludes with a further period of rest in cool, protected environments, allowing this red to achieve impeccable balance before being enjoyed.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, the iconic Massolino winery represents a true excellence of the Langhe region. The renowned Barolo DOCG, long considered the “wine of Kings”, is produced from fine Nebbiolo grapes grown on calcareous-marl soils rich in clay. The perfect synergy between the ten hectares of vineyard and the extraordinary terroir gives the wine a solid structure and ensures exceptional longevity. The undisputed quality of the 2021 vintage is confirmed by the prestigious scores from James Suckling and Vinous.

With tenacity and passion, we have been making wine since 1896.
Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda is the dream of our great-grandfather Giovanni, who founded the estate in 1896. In those days, it was a traditional Langa farm, producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine.
Our family is firmly at the helm of the historic estate that inhaled the vibrant air full of change of the late 19th century and navigated the tides of the first half of the 20th century. Today, we face the new challenges of the 21st century, in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations.
We are Massolino Vigna Rionda and we are writing a legacy with our wines. Read more
