Description

What kind of wine it is

Maison Stephan Syrah is a still organic red wine from the Rhône Valley, classified as Vin de France. Made from Syrah grapes, it stands out for its ruby red colour and fruity aromas blended with notes of undergrowth and peony. On the palate, it is bold and balanced, characterised by a long finish and a distinct peppery note. This profile makes it ideal to pair with grilled meats, cured meats, starters and fresh cheeses. It is recommended to decant for an hour before serving to appreciate every nuance.

Where it comes from

The wine originates from Tupin-et-Semons, an area of France particularly suited to Syrah. The vines grow on mixed soils, composed of ancient Rhône alluvium and glacial moraine subsoils. This specific geological formation allows the plant to express great aromatic precision and vibrant freshness. Its classification as Vin de France ensures a faithful interpretation of the terroir, resulting in a clean and recognisable style in the glass.

How it is produced

Maison Stephan produces this wine using only Syrah grapes, which undergo eight months of ageing in concrete vats. This technical choice supports the wine’s development while preserving the original fragrance of the fruit, without any external aromatic interference. On the palate, there is excellent harmony that highlights the typical cherry notes. The result is a tasting experience with a distinct and balanced character, capable of offering a pleasant lingering taste.

Jean-Michel Stephan is an independent spirit of the Côte-Rôtie. He studied in Belleville, in Beaujolais and took his first steps in 1991, spurred on by his passion for biology and plants. The most extensive property is 1.5 ha on the Coteau de Bassenon. It is a slope of 40 °, with lots of terraces carved into soft granite or beola. The upper part is from 1987; the low part, of 0.87 ha goes from 1896 to 1902 and this part is used in the cuvée "Vieille Vigne en Coteaux" when the vintage is level. His other sites are Tupin (1965), Coteaux de Tupin (1980), and a tiny plot of 0.3 ha at Verenay (1992). At present, its vineyard is about 60% clone massal, 30% Serrine, and 10% Viognier. Read more
