Description
What kind of wine it is
Montefalco Sagrantino Lungarotti is an organic red wine that enhances the characteristics of the Sagrantino grape variety. Part of the renowned Montefalco Sagrantino denomination, it stands out for its deep ruby colour with violet highlights. The bouquet is broad, with hints of blueberry and morello cherry blending with sweet spice notes, cocoa and cinchona. On the palate, it reveals a powerful structure, dense tannins and fresh acidity, finishing with a harmonious aftertaste. After decanting, it is the ideal pairing for mature cheeses and rich dishes based on game and roasts.
Where it comes from
The vineyards are located on the Umbrian hills with a south-west exposure, on sandy-clay soil with a limestone subsoil. The double cordon spur training system encourages a high phenolic concentration. Every agricultural practice follows the parameters of organic certification, operating in full respect of the local ecosystem. This exceptional terroir gives the wine an innate aptitude for ageing, ensuring marked longevity for an evolution capable of exceeding a decade.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place at the end of September. Vinification begins in steel with a twenty-eight day skin maceration, essential for extracting colour and structure. Subsequently, the wine rests for twelve months in barrels, enriching its aromatic profile. A light filtration precedes the final three-year maturation, necessary to seal a perfect structural balance before release to the market.
History and Curiosities
The Sagrantino di Montefalco is one of the oldest native Umbrian grape varieties, renowned for its extraordinary polyphenolic complexity. An evocative legend tells that Frederick II of Swabia cured his favourite falcon with this local elixir, thus giving rise to its name. The Lungarotti winery, a wine-making excellence founded in 1962, played a crucial role in the recognition of the denomination in 1979. This organic wine honours tradition, boasting 95 points from James Suckling and Three Glasses Gambero Rosso.
