Description

What kind of wine it is

Viña Cubillo Crianza by López de Heredia is a red wine with Rioja designation. This dry and elegant blend, aged for a long time in oak barrels, is created from a combination of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes. On the nose, it develops a deep aromatic profile dominated by dark fruits and plum, which evolves into notes of liquorice, cocoa, vanilla, black pepper, eucalyptus and earthy undertones of undergrowth. On the palate, it stands out for its smooth and harmonious texture, offering a complex drinking experience that finishes with a fresh and persistent finish, ideal for pairing with meat dishes and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The roots of this red wine lie in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, an area renowned for its Spanish winemaking tradition. All the grapes used come from estate-owned vineyards. The winery, founded in 1877, maintains a strong historical connection with Haro and Rioja Alta, embodying generations of experience and a deep respect for winemaking tradition.

How it is produced

Production follows classic winemaking methods, respecting the natural maturation times of the wine. The red wine rests in American oak barrels for 36 months, with careful racking carried out twice a year to encourage clarity. Clarification is done entirely naturally, using only fresh egg whites and avoiding invasive mechanical interventions. The process concludes without any filtration, a technical choice that preserves the full aromatic and flavour richness of the wine, which may naturally result in the formation of light sediment.

History and Curiosities

Produced by the López de Heredia winery, founded in 1877, this wine embodies the experience of generations and a deep respect for tradition. The family-run company also celebrates its heritage through the traditional label, which features elaborate lettering and a vintage illustration of a vineyard, emphasising the historic connection with Haro, in Rioja Alta. This wine offers a true journey through time via the authentic flavours of Spain.

It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. Our founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.

For over a century our emotions have been rooted in our love and passion for this land and its harvest. We cherish our heritage, and this combination of love and the rigorous quality standards we apply, have become our trademarks and remain our maxim for today and the future.

Bodegas López de Heredia stands out as one of the few family-run bodegas regulated by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja – DOC (Appellation region).
