Description
What kind of wine it is
Sosso by Livio Felluga is a still red wine that expresses the identity of the Colli Orientali del Friuli through a refined blend of Merlot, Pignolo and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grapes. It presents a deep ruby red colour in the glass. Its complex bouquet unfolds gradually, releasing notes of calla lily, cedarwood, redcurrant, toasted almonds and shortcrust pastry, enriched by hints of rosemary, undergrowth and pomegranate. On the palate, it reveals a fruity and mineral structure, supported by ripe tannins that lead the sip towards a persistent finish of red fruits, vanilla and juniper berries.
Where it comes from
This wine takes its name from the Sosso stream, which borders the historic hills of Rosazzo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the estate in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. Livio Felluga adopts the principles of integrated pest management to reduce environmental impact and protect local biodiversity. This allows the most authentic nuances of the Friulian terroir and the essence of the cultivated varieties to be transferred into the glass.
How it is produced
The vinification process begins with destemming and gentle crushing of the bunches. Fermentation takes place with temperature-controlled maceration in stainless steel tanks and truncated-cone vats. For about three weeks, frequent pump-overs are carried out to encourage the extraction of colour and aromatic components from the skins. After racking, the wines are blended and transferred to small French oak barrels, where they mature for eighteen months. The process is completed with a significant bottle ageing for a further eighteen months in temperature-controlled environments, an essential phase to harmonise the tannic texture and perfect the elegance of the bouquet.
History and Curiosities
Created in 1989, Sosso Rosso Riserva takes its name from the stream of the same name that flows at the foot of the historic Rosazzo hills. This Friulian masterpiece is born from the estate’s oldest vineyards, harmoniously blending Merlot, Pignolo and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grapes. A symbol of the Livio Felluga winery, founded in 1956, the wine patiently matures in French oak barrels for eighteen months, developing exceptional elegance. The superb 2019 vintage, awarded 93 points by James Suckling, enhances the prestigious tradition of the Colli Orientali.
