Description
What kind of wine it is
Valtellina Superiore PR28 is a still red wine that embodies the essence of the Lombardy region, produced by the La Spia winery exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, locally known as Chiavennasca. An expression of the prestigious Valtellina Superiore area, it stands out for its full and authoritative style, supported by a structure ideal for long ageing. On the palate, it reveals harmonious velvety tannins, while the bouquet offers complex nuances ranging from red fruit to liquorice, enriched by elegant toasted notes.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from vineyards located in the municipalities of Berbenno and Montagna in Valtellina, with particular attention to the historic Dossi Salati vineyard, situated in the renowned Grumello subzone. The rows extend at an altitude between 320 and 520 metres, where the favourable southern exposure allows for optimal ripening and the definition of a clear aromatic profile. The commitment of the Rigamonti family, who took their first steps in the nearby Sassella area, continues on these lands to enhance Chiavennasca through meticulous selection and constant care of the vineyard landscape.
How it is produced
Under the guidance of oenologist Emil Galimberti, manual harvesting ensures the integrity of the bunches upon arrival at the winery. The vinification process includes a long maceration in contact with the skins, essential for proper phenolic extraction, followed by a period in steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine undergoes slow maturation in large barrels for over two years. This long resting period ensures excellent taste balance and a stability that fully enhances the character of the Nebbiolo grape variety.
History and Curiosities
Born among the prestigious Lombard vineyards, the La Spia winery stands as a testament to the Rigamonti family's dedication to Chiavennasca, the noble local biotype of Nebbiolo. This excellent Valtellina Superiore DOCG is produced from grapes harvested strictly by hand in the small plots of Grumello and Berbenno, maturing in large barrels for over two years. Under the guidance of oenologist Emil Galimberti, the award-winning 2021 vintage offers a tasting experience of vigorous character, celebrating the authentic winemaking tradition of a unique region.

In recent years, La Spia has changed its production rate from just under 5,000 to over 15,000 bottles produced. The company took over small, selected vineyards in neighbouring sub-zones, such as 'Grumello' and 'Valtellina Superiore' in the town of Berbenno. From these vineyards, the increasingly careful selection of Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) pushed the company to separate the different types of grapes. Read more
