Description

What kind of wine it is

Kurtatsch Cabernet Sauvignon Freienfeld Riserva from Cantina Kurtatsch is a still red wine, a profound expression of Alto Adige. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, it displays an intense garnet red colour. The bouquet blends aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and plum with notes of damp earth, bay leaf, rosemary and peppermint. On the palate, the solid structure is supported by a silky tannic texture and lively acidity that brings balance, finishing with a long and persistent finish enriched by elegant toasted hints.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Freienfeld vineyard, a historic walled plot located near a Renaissance estate in Cortaccia. The hillside slopes, facing south-east between two hundred and twenty and three hundred and fifty metres above sea level, benefit from a warm microclimate and excellent sunlight. The clay, sand and gravel soils, characterised by a distinct dolomitic matrix, ensure perfect drainage. This specific Alpine terroir guarantees regular ripening, giving the wine precision and remarkable flavour persistence.

How it is produced

Produced exclusively in the best vintages, this wine is born from temperature-controlled fermentation in rotofermenters, essential for optimal phenolic extraction. Ageing involves about fifteen months in lightly toasted French barrels, followed by a further nine months in large oak casks. A final resting period in bottle of at least twelve months allows the fruity and spicy components to harmonise, defining the elegant substance of this structured red.

History and Curiosities

The name Freienfeld pays homage to the historic Renaissance estate in Cortaccia, home to the Kurtatsch Winery since 1900. This exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon originates from an exclusive walled vineyard, where the warm microclimate and Dolomitic soils have enhanced French grape varieties since the nineteenth century. Produced exclusively in the best vintages, this Riserva is acclaimed by critics and boasts prestigious awards such as the Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso and 94 Parker points. A red wine with Alpine charm and great ageing potential.
