Description
What kind of wine it is
Jean Michel Gerin Saint Joseph Rouge is a still red wine from the Rhône Valley, produced by Jean Michel Gerin exclusively from Syrah grapes. In the glass, it reveals a medium-bodied structure and excellent purity of flavour, with pronounced tannins that emerge on the finish, providing persistence and rigour. The aromatic profile is characterised by intense notes of black raspberry, leather, spicy herbs and a typical hint of lard. To best appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to decant it for an hour before serving.
Where it comes from
The Saint Joseph area identifies a wine-growing zone in the Rhône Valley characterised by a distinctive granitic soil. The vineyards from which this wine originates benefit from a south and south-east exposure, enjoying a dual climatic influence, both Mediterranean and continental, which ensures naturally low yields and perfect ripening of the grapes. The Jean Michel Gerin estate, located in Ampuis in the heart of Côte Rôtie, boasts a deep family history rooted in this territory for six generations, offering an authentic expression of the terroir of origin.
How it is produced
The production process begins with the harvest carried out in the last days of September. In the winery, the Syrah undergoes a total destemming, a fundamental step in defining the elegance of the palate. The must then undergoes a three-week maceration, aimed at achieving a balanced extraction of colour and aromatic components. Subsequently, the wine matures in barrels for twelve months, an essential phase that allows the tannic structure to integrate and enriches the body, ensuring an ageing potential that can reach up to fifteen years.
History and Curiosities
Rooted in Ampuis for six generations, the Gerin family expresses the soul of the Rhône through its Saint Joseph AOC. Born from Syrah grapes grown on granite soils, at the meeting point between the Mediterranean and continental climates, this red reveals extraordinary purity. Total destemming and skilful barrel ageing for twelve months give the wine firm yet elegant tannins, combined with notes of black raspberry, leather and lard. A medium-bodied red with a longevity of 10-15 years, it is ideal to decant an hour before serving to enhance every nuance.
