Description

What kind of wine it is

Morgon Cuvée Corcelette by Jean Foillard is a still red wine that enhances the characteristics of the Gamay grape. This interpretation of Beaujolais stands out for its ruby red colour and releases fruity aromas blended with elegant notes of violet. On the palate, it is fresh and enveloping, with a structure ideal for pairing with cured meats, white meats and mature cheeses. It is a wine with excellent ageing potential, capable of evolving beautifully over a period of ten to fifteen years. To fully enjoy it, a serving temperature between 16 and 18 degrees is recommended.

Where it comes from

This wine is produced in France, in the heart of Beaujolais, within the renowned Morgon area. The grapes come from the Côte du Py area, where the old vines draw nourishment from soils composed of granite and schist located on an alluvial cone. This particular geological matrix gives the glass a distinct territorial identity and a pleasant smoothness. Jean Foillard manages the vineyards with extreme rigour, completely excluding the use of herbicides and synthetic pesticides to preserve the balance of the surrounding environment.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a late harvest and a meticulous selection of the bunches. In the winery, methods inspired by Jules Chauvet are followed, avoiding invasive interventions such as chaptalisation. The decision not to filter allows the original complexity of the must to remain intact. As this is an unfiltered wine, it is advisable to decant for about an hour before consumption, to encourage oxygenation and the full expression of the aromatic bouquet. The result is a clean and essential profile, awarded 92 points by Vinous critics.

History and Curiosities

Born in Beaujolais, the Morgon Cuvée Corcelette 2022 by Jean Foillard expresses the soul of Gamay. Produced from old vines on granite and schist without chemical herbicides, it is the result of a late harvest and rigorous selection. Following Jules Chauvet, the vinification without filtration and with minimal addition of sulphites preserves its purity. Awarded 92 points by Vinous, it boasts an extraordinary ageing potential and evolves elegantly for 15 years.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1981
Jean and Agnès Foillard took over his father’s domaine in 1980. Most of their vineyards are planted on the Côte du Py, the famed slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon and the pride of Morgon. These granite and schist soils sit on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town and impart great complexity. However, great real estate is not the only key to Foillard’s success. Early on, Jean began to follow the teachings of Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon joined in on the movement. They return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. The end result allows Morgon to express itself naturally, as it should be without the bubblegum and banana aromas of so many other Beaujolais available today. Its rustic structure, spicy notes, and mineral-laden backbone are what real Morgon is all about. Read more

This refined red wine pairs beautifully with cured meats and white meats, enhancing every bite with its fresh and expansive profile. The fruity aromas and elegant violet notes blend perfectly with mature cheeses. To fully appreciate its purity and integrity, given the absence of filtration, it is recommended to decant it for an hour and serve at a temperature of 16–18 °C.
