Description

What kind of wine it is

Cepparello is a still red wine from Tuscany, a true expression of the Sangiovese grape variety. On the palate, it displays an elegant structure and a well-defined tannic texture, supported by lively acidity. The aromatic profile opens with notes of morello cherry and blackcurrant, enriched by hints of graphite and dark chocolate. The sip reveals remarkable balance and finishes with a dry, exceptionally long-lasting aftertaste, clearly recalling the small red fruits detected on the nose.

Where it comes from

This wine is produced at the Isole e Olena estate, located within the renowned Chianti Classico terroir. The vines grow under a favourable Mediterranean climate on calcareous-clay soils characterised by marl elements, ideal conditions to enhance the grape’s qualities. The vineyard, planted at high density, ensures low yields that favour aromatic concentration. The label’s name pays tribute to the Cepparello stream, the small watercourse that flows among the estate’s rows of vines.

How it is produced

The agricultural management at Isole e Olena excludes synthetic fertilisers and minimises the use of plant protection treatments, safeguarding the health of the vines. In the winery, the must is transformed through spontaneous fermentation triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine matures for eighteen months in French and American oak barrels, developing great depth. A long final ageing in glass consolidates the absolute harmony of the flavour profile before release.

History and Curiosities

Cepparello by Isole e Olena was created in the 1980s, at a time when a pure Sangiovese could not yet bear the Chianti designation. The estate, founded in 1956 and led by Paolo De Marchi, pays tribute to Tuscany by naming the label after a stream that flows near a dense vineyard. After eighteen months of ageing in oak barriques, the 2022 vintage reveals an elegant and harmonious structure, awarded 95 points by Robert Parker and Vinous. The 220,000 bottles produced reflect an absolute dedication to winemaking excellence.

This estate, run by Paolo de Marchi, is yet another that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo's family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around. Experience working a vintage or two in California helped, but no doubt the input received from oenological consultant Donato Lanati has also been of significance.

The wines have Cepparello at their head, a barrique-aged Sangiovese classified as an IGT - because at the time of its creation in the 1980s a wine comprising 100% Sangiovese could not legally be labelled as Chianti. There is a Chianti Classico and a Vin Santo, as well as some excellent wines from the Collezione de Marchi label, including a Syrah called Eremo, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay.
