Description

What kind of wine it is

The Merlot from I Magredi clearly expresses the characteristics of the grape variety in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Originating from the Friuli Grave area, it appears in the glass with a ruby red colour and violet highlights. The aromatic profile offers distinct forest fruits, with hints of blackcurrant, blueberry and plum, combined with subtle herbal notes. On the palate, it reveals a balanced structure, with velvety tannins that accompany the sip while preserving the fruit. Its natural versatility makes it ideal for pairing with cured meat platters, flavourful first courses and robust main dishes such as duck breast.

Where it comes from

This wine is produced in San Giorgio della Richinvelda, a territory with a strong winemaking tradition. The vines sink their roots into the local stony plains, an ideal soil for giving the grapes a clear and clean character. The environment benefits from a unique microclimate, influenced by the Alps, the Mediterranean and the nearby Pannonian plain. This synergy encourages a marked temperature range, alternating warm days with cool nights, perfect for fixing the aromas and ensuring excellent freshness. The Friuli Grave area reflects this combination, outlining a lively and harmonious profile.

How it is produced

The winemaking philosophy at I Magredi is based on careful handling of the grapes. The initial stages involve gentle crushing and pressing, followed by cold settling of the must. The subsequent maceration on the skins takes place at a controlled temperature for about eight to ten days, allowing for a gentle extraction of colour and polyphenols. The wine then matures in stainless steel tanks kept at low temperatures, allowing the profile to evolve precisely and enhancing the varietal purity of the Merlot, resulting in a pleasant and smooth sip.

History and Curiosities

Produced by the winery founded in 1968 in San Giorgio della Richinvelda, I Magredi Merlot 2022 embodies the pure essence of the Friuli Grave DOC. Its name pays tribute to the local stony plains, an exceptional terroir where the temperature variation between cool nights and warm days gives rise to vibrant and intact fruit. Thanks to meticulous vinification and maturation in stainless steel at low temperatures, this label preserves the original rich aromas, offering a soft and velvety sip. A skilful blend of modern technology and Friulian roots.

I Magredi was bought in 1968 by Otello Tombacco, entrepreneur native of Oderzo. At the beginning there were several crops: arable areas alternating apple trees, peach trees and finally vineyards. The harvested fruit was sold at the stand while the grape was brought to Oderzo for the vinification. In 1985 after his graduation Michelangelo, Otello’s son, began to work in the family business and in the late ‘80s they transform I Magredi in a winery choosing to cultivate only vineyards.

The first part of the actual cellar was built in 1990 and it was enlarged and modernized in technologies and structures several times: 2000,2003,2007. In January 2018 a new project has been undertaken with the construction of a new building. The cellar is equipped with state-of-the-art plants: soft crushing plant, technologies for the maintaining of the cold chain during the various stages of musts and wine processing, innovative fermentation tanks for the vinification, modern centrifuges and filters for the cleaning of musts and wines.

Thanks to the knowledge of traditional Friulian vinegrowing and winemaking, but never neglecting innovation and environmental protection, I Magredi winery is now one of the protagonists of regional winemaking.
