Description
What kind of wine it is
Nerojbleo is a still organic red wine produced by Gulfi in the Terre Siciliane region. Made from Nero d’Avola grapes, it reveals an ethereal and intense aromatic profile, characterised by small red fruits and hints of vanilla. On the palate, it is elegant and harmonious, distinguished by remarkable continuity of flavour. Its solid structure ensures excellent ageing potential, allowing it to evolve optimally for over a decade if stored correctly.
Where it comes from
This red originates in Chiaramonte Gulfi, on the Iblei Mountains, at around 450 metres above sea level. The vines thrive in a temperate Mediterranean climate, cultivated organically and without irrigation. The roots delve into calcareous-clay soils, which are essential for enhancing the aromatic concentration of Nero d’Avola. The high planting density ensures a strong territorial imprint, delivering the pure and authentic expression of this renowned Sicilian area.
How it is produced
The late September harvest is followed by red vinification with prolonged maceration on the skins. The wine then matures for at least twelve months in French oak barrels, acquiring great aromatic complexity. The process concludes with a long ageing of one year, essential for integrating the wood notes and harmonising the flavour. This rigorous procedure defines the deep ruby colour and a bouquet with perfectly balanced notes.
History and Curiosities
The Nerojbleo 2022 from Cantina Gulfi embodies the genuine passion of Vito Catania and Salvo Foti. This award-winning organic Nero d’Avola, praised by critics such as Vinous and James Suckling, is produced at an altitude of 450 metres on unirrigated calcareous-clay soils. After a meticulous harvest at the end of September and a lengthy maceration on the skins, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, followed by a further year of ageing in the bottle. The result is an elegant and ethereal glass, capable of evolving beautifully for up to fifteen years.
