Description

What kind of wine it is

Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso is an elegant, still organic wine. This blend of grape varieties harmonises Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese. On the nose, it is intense, with aromas of small black fruits, candied plum, liquorice and cinnamon evolving into notes of sweet tobacco. The palate is soft and enveloping, boasting excellent flavour progression, supported by pleasant acidity and fine tannins. To fully appreciate its complexity when paired with meats, game and mature cheeses, a preliminary decanting of about an hour is recommended.

Where it comes from

Produced in Bolgheri, in the heart of Tuscany, this wine originates from the Grattamacco vineyards. The complex soil matrix, characterised by tuffaceous clays, marl and alluvial pebbles, gives the structure remarkable definition. The estate has operated since 1977, following the strict principles of organic farming on the Livorno hills. The natural balance between the local microclimate and the unique features of the area ensures this red has significant ageing potential, capable of evolving beautifully for over a decade.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with alcoholic fermentation in open wooden vats and stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. This is followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels, a crucial step to soften the acidity and define the tannic structure. The wine then matures in wooden barrels for a period of ten months. The process concludes with a final ageing of at least six months, which gives the palate an elegant finish and a finely spiced texture.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1977, the Grattamacco winery has helped to shape the prestigious identity of the Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany. Born among the splendid hills of Livorno and overseen by expert oenologists, this refined wine stands out for its extraordinary longevity of 10-15 years, promising collectors a complex, profound and exciting evolution of flavour over time.

A winemaking company of pioneers: the second winery to be established in Bolgheri in 1977; the very first to vinify Bolgheri Rosso, to believe in Vermentino and to enhance elevated vineyards; one of the few to maintain Sangiovese in the blend that gives life to Bolgheri Superiore. In 1994, the authors of the regulations that initiated the enological history of the denomination gathered under the centuries-old oak tree of the farmhouse. Read more
