Description
What kind of wine it is
The Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo by Girolamo Russo is a still red wine that precisely expresses the character of Sicilian viticulture. The result of a careful blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, it appears in the glass with an intense ruby red colour. The aromatic profile weaves together notes of fresh fruit, with cherry and wild berries standing out, alongside pronounced hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is broad and elegant, supported by a vibrant acidity that gives great freshness to the drink. Its remarkable structure and long-lasting flavour make it ideal for pairing with beef dishes and mature cheeses with a strong taste.
Where it comes from
This expression originates on the slopes of the volcano in Sicily, specifically in the Contrada Feudo di Mezzo located in the territory of Randazzo. The true protagonist of this area is the deep volcanic soil, a natural element that unmistakably defines the identity of Etna. This particular geological composition gives the wine a distinctive character, helping to shape a clear and recognisable profile. The origin from this extreme terroir translates into a sip with intense aromatic expressiveness and vibrant freshness, faithfully reflecting the unique pedoclimatic conditions of the Etna environment.
How it is produced
The production process aims to maximise the unique qualities of the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes. After careful harvesting, red vinification allows for a balanced extraction of colour and delicate aromatic components. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a period of ageing, essential for stabilising the structural texture and harmoniously integrating the natural acidity with the persistence on the palate. This precise production approach enables Girolamo Russo to preserve the territorial character, offering an authentic interpretation of the varietal typicity without altering its original gustatory balance.

This is the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
The Russos have 26 hectares of land in and around Passopisciaro, with 15 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves. The vineyards are high up, between 650 and 780 metres above sea level, inland from the beautiful town of Taormina. Many of the free-standing bush vines are over 80 years old, surviving in harmony with Etna’s black, mineral-rich volcanic soil.
Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
Some lava flows are very recent, too recent even to plant on.
The area is broken up into sectors known as ‘contradas’. Each contrada has a name and is linked to one of Etna’s townships. Read more
