Description
What kind of wine it is
Feudo is an Etna Rosso by Girolamo Russo, made from a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes grown organically. It presents an intense ruby red colour, which heralds a deep aromatic bouquet. Notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and morello cherry elegantly merge with balsamic nuances and hints of leather, tobacco and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is broad and elegant, supported by a vibrant acidic freshness. Its remarkable persistence makes it ideal for pairing with flavourful first courses, red meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie in the soils of Passopisciaro, Sicily, within the historic Feudo district in the municipality of Randazzo. Its inclusion in the Etna Rosso denomination attests to a deep connection with the volcanic slopes, which impart a distinctive mineral and structural character. Coming from a single plot allows the wine to express a precise territorial identity, marked by a fascinating gustatory tension. The altitude and unique soil and climate conditions favour a harmonious balance that enhances the natural finesse of the grapes.
How it is produced
The vinification process begins with a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts, followed by a thirteen-day maceration on the skins to extract colour and structure. Maturation then takes place for sixteen months in barrels, a choice aimed at refining the tannic texture while preserving the integrity of the varietal aromas. Ageing concludes with a further six months' rest in the cellar. This careful approach results in a persistent and vibrant sip, reflecting a rigorous and very clean winemaking style.

This is the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
The Russos have 26 hectares of land in and around Passopisciaro, with 15 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves. The vineyards are high up, between 650 and 780 metres above sea level, inland from the beautiful town of Taormina. Many of the free-standing bush vines are over 80 years old, surviving in harmony with Etna’s black, mineral-rich volcanic soil.
Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
Some lava flows are very recent, too recent even to plant on.
The area is broken up into sectors known as ‘contradas’. Each contrada has a name and is linked to one of Etna’s townships. Read more
