Description
What kind of wine it is
Nerina by Girolamo Russo is a still white wine that faithfully represents Etna Bianco. It is made from a blend of Carricante grapes, complemented by native varieties such as Catarratto, Grecanico and Coda di Volpe. In the glass, it appears straw yellow with bright golden highlights. The bouquet offers notes of peach, tropical fruit and broom, enriched by delicate vanilla nuances. On the palate, it expresses an ideal balance between elegant creaminess and a clear mineral texture. The sip is agile, finishing with a deep savoury persistence.
Where it comes from
This wine is produced in Sicily, in Passopisciaro, from vineyards located in the districts of San Lorenzo, Feudo and Calderara Sottana. The vines grow on deep volcanic soil, a vital element that gives the wine a strong gustatory personality. The distinctive Etna terroir enhances the natural expressiveness of the grapes, giving the glass a vibrant energy. This richness translates into well-integrated acidity and precise aromatic definition, while the strong connection to the land is evident in the intense minerality perceived on tasting.
How it is produced
The work in the cellar aims to preserve the purity of the fruit. The must undergoes fermentation in barrels, acquiring depth and aromatic complexity. This is followed by maturation on the lees for about six months in the same barrels, a crucial step to impart a pleasant creaminess to the structure. The process concludes with a further period of refinement in the bottle, a necessary rest to harmonise freshness with subtle tertiary aromas and ensure a balanced and satisfying tasting experience.
History and Curiosities
Nerina is the refined Etna Bianco DOC from Girolamo Russo, an expression of the Sicilian volcanic soils. This elegant cuvée is predominantly made from the Carricante grape variety, skilfully blended with precious local indigenous varieties. Fermentation and maturation in wooden barrels on the lees, followed by a slow ageing in the bottle, release enveloping aromas of peach and broom. On the palate, it offers a masterful balance between creaminess and freshness, culminating in a profound savoury persistence that celebrates the essence of the Etna terroir.

This is the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
The Russos have 26 hectares of land in and around Passopisciaro, with 15 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves. The vineyards are high up, between 650 and 780 metres above sea level, inland from the beautiful town of Taormina. Many of the free-standing bush vines are over 80 years old, surviving in harmony with Etna’s black, mineral-rich volcanic soil.
Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
Some lava flows are very recent, too recent even to plant on.
The area is broken up into sectors known as ‘contradas’. Each contrada has a name and is linked to one of Etna’s townships. Read more
