Description
What kind of wine it is
Girlan Lagrein is a still red wine that best expresses the qualities of the Lagrein grape variety in the Alto Adige region. It offers a refined aromatic profile, characterised by scents of violet, hints of wood and a balsamic note. On the palate, the entry is lively, but evolves into a full and velvety sip, balanced by solid freshness and a slightly tart finish. The presence of black pepper and spirit-soaked fruit defines a bold and well-structured flavour.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in Cornaiano, from vineyards cultivated by Girlan located between 250 and 550 metres above sea level, in the areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. The composition of the sandy soils, warm and deep, favours optimal ripening of the bunches. Meticulous agronomic care and constant respect for the environment allow the natural characteristics of this region of origin to be fully appreciated.
How it is produced
The bunches are hand-picked to preserve the integrity of the fruit. In the winery, the must is destemmed and undergoes a slow fermentation at controlled temperature in steel tanks. The subsequent malolactic fermentation softens the structure, followed by eight months of ageing in oak barrels and concrete tanks. This maturation perfects the tactile texture and clearly brings out the spicy notes.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1923 in a historic 16th-century farmhouse in Cornaiano, Cantina Girlan brings together around 200 members to create the oenological excellence of South Tyrol. From hillside vineyards comes this refined 100% Lagrein, whose grapes are meticulously hand-picked in small containers. The perfect blend of tradition and modern techniques is achieved through a targeted ageing process of eight months in large oak barrels and concrete vats. This slow maturation gives the wine an elegant structure, enhancing its full and pleasantly velvety taste.
