Description
What kind of wine is it
Girlan's Gewurztraminer is a still white wine with Controlled Designation of Origin from Alto Adige, which precisely expresses the character of its original grape variety. On the nose, it develops an intense aromatic profile, where floral notes of rose and lychee intertwine with hints of apricot, tropical fruit and spicy notes of cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, it ranges from dry to off-dry, revealing a medium-full body that is harmonious and rounded, balanced by a pronounced freshness. Maturation in stainless steel tanks provides a clear and persistent interpretation of the varietal aromatic profile.
Where does it come from
The Gewurztraminer grapes are grown in the Alto Adige region, cultivated between the Bassa Atesina and the hills of Oltradige, in the renowned areas of Cornaiano, Egna and Mazon. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 250 and 1000 metres, rooted in medium-textured clay soils that encourage full ripening. The Alpine-Mediterranean climate, with its three hundred days of sunshine per year, creates unique microclimates. This natural synergy gives the wine's structure a pronounced aromatic intensity.
How is it produced
Production begins with a manual harvest, with careful selection of the bunches before gentle pressing. The must is clarified by natural sedimentation, then alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Maturation continues for about six months on the fine lees, always in steel, excluding malolactic fermentation to preserve the original tension. This technical approach produces a vegan white wine with a harmonious texture and a long, clean finish.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1923 in a historic building in Cornaiano, Kellerei Girlan embodies the winemaking spirit of South Tyrol. The winery brings together two hundred members who hand-cultivate prestigious plots of about one hectare each, working in full respect of the environment. Awarded the Gambero Rosso star for having received the “Tre Bicchieri” more than ten times, the company skilfully combines historical traditions with innovative approaches. Since 2017, it has adopted the delicate gravity-fed vinification, an essential technique for preserving the elegance and lively aromatic purity of the grapes.
