Description
Type of wine
Giovanni Rosso's Roero Arneis is a Piedmontese white wine with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG), produced from Arneis grapes, with fermentation in stainless steel and ageing on the lees. It expresses a refined profile, with notes of pear and ripe peach, hints of acacia, white flowers and tropical fruit. On the palate, it reveals a smooth and persistent structure, balanced by a vibrant freshness that culminates in a savoury and mineral finish. It pairs perfectly with fish-based dishes, fried seafood, vegetable soups and cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the Roero Arneis territory, on the left bank of the Tanaro river. The vineyards, situated at an altitude of approximately two hundred and eighty metres, boast vines over thirty-five years old with varied exposures on the hillsides. The strength of this area lies in its sandy soils, rich in fossil deposits and limestone. This geological matrix gives the wine a remarkable expressive finesse and that distinct minerality that defines its character.
How it is produced
The manual harvest takes place in September, followed by destemming and soft pressing of the Arneis grapes. The must undergoes a short cold maceration and fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. Ageing for six months on the lees imparts roundness and breadth to the palate, before a final rest of three months. In the glass, it presents a bright straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections.
History and facts
Since 1890, the Giovanni Rosso family has been cultivating vines in Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of Barolo. Under the guidance of Davide Rosso, the winery produces Roero Arneis DOCG following a rigorous philosophy: to deliver a perfect copy of the terroir in the glass. The historic vines, aged between 35 and 45 years, are situated at an altitude of 280 metres on the picturesque left bank of the River Tanaro. Rooted in sandy soils rich in fossils, the grapes capture the true essence of Piedmont, offering an excellence that faithfully reflects the territory of origin.

Giovanni's son, Davide, studied Oenology and gained invaluable experience in France. In 2001 Davide, then 27 years old, took charge of the vinification & affinamento/elevage of the wines with one goal in mind: "Wine should be a perfect copy of its terroir"... in this case from the slopes of Serralunga d'Alba, among the finest soils in the world.
The Giovanni Rosso cantina (winery) is located in the hamlet of Baudana, just a couple of kilometres north of Serralunga d'Alba village. A traditional family cascina, or farmhouse, it houses the fermentation, ageing, bottling and labeling facilities as well as the offices.
Davide Rosso has been looking for many years for a new terroir where he could face a new challenge himself. The side-project was officially born in May 2016 with the purchase of the Etna estate near the village Solicchiata of Castiglione di Sicilia. The farm rises a few kilometers before Passopisciaro down to Montedolce, a small inactive crater that gives the name to the Contrada. We are in the northeast side of the volcano, a perfectly suited area for the production of red wines. The new holdings extend for fourteen hectares in one single plot among which just something more than six hectares are dedicated to viticulture: 1.2 ha for the whites and 5.5 ha for the reds (Carricante and Nerello Mascalese with small percentages of other local grape varieties, as the tradition requires). The training system has been renamed as "candelabro". Read more
