Description
What kind of wine it is
Giovanni Rosso Barolo is a still red wine that showcases pure Nebbiolo within the renowned Barolo denomination. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour, heralding a clear and clean aromatic profile. The bouquet combines notes of violet, cherries in spirit and mulberry, enriched by hints of star anise and dried leaves. On the palate, it reveals a refined and elegant body, supported by composed and balanced tannins that lead to a persistent finish. Thanks to this structure, it is ideal for pairing with red meats, game, fresh pasta and mature cheeses, and is also surprisingly good with grilled fish enhanced by flavourful sauces.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the prestigious crus of Serralunga d’Alba, set in the extraordinary hilly landscape of Piedmont. The estate’s vineyards, covering nine hectares and trained using the Guyot method, are cultivated to preserve the territorial character of the soils. The Giovanni Rosso winery, located in the Baudana hamlet, represents a family dedicated to local viticulture for over a century. Under the guidance of oenologist Davide Rosso, the company adopts a technical approach aimed at rigorously enhancing the expression of the terroir and the unique features of the various hillside slopes.
How it is produced
Production begins with the harvest in mid-October, followed by fermentation in cement vats. This stage lasts for about twenty-five days, with daily pump-overs and a délestage halfway through to optimise the extraction of phenolic compounds. Afterwards, the wine matures in French oak barrels for a period ranging from eighteen to thirty-six months, carefully determined according to the climate and the characteristics of the vineyard. This meticulous management of maturation times gives a refined structure, faithfully reflecting the original quality of the grapes.

Giovanni's son, Davide, studied Oenology and gained invaluable experience in France. In 2001 Davide, then 27 years old, took charge of the vinification & affinamento/elevage of the wines with one goal in mind: "Wine should be a perfect copy of its terroir"... in this case from the slopes of Serralunga d'Alba, among the finest soils in the world.
The Giovanni Rosso cantina (winery) is located in the hamlet of Baudana, just a couple of kilometres north of Serralunga d'Alba village. A traditional family cascina, or farmhouse, it houses the fermentation, ageing, bottling and labeling facilities as well as the offices.
Davide Rosso has been looking for many years for a new terroir where he could face a new challenge himself. The side-project was officially born in May 2016 with the purchase of the Etna estate near the village Solicchiata of Castiglione di Sicilia. The farm rises a few kilometers before Passopisciaro down to Montedolce, a small inactive crater that gives the name to the Contrada. We are in the northeast side of the volcano, a perfectly suited area for the production of red wines. The new holdings extend for fourteen hectares in one single plot among which just something more than six hectares are dedicated to viticulture: 1.2 ha for the whites and 5.5 ha for the reds (Carricante and Nerello Mascalese with small percentages of other local grape varieties, as the tradition requires). The training system has been renamed as "candelabro". Read more
