Description
What kind of wine it is
Bompè Langhe Barbera by Borgogno is an organic red wine from Piedmont, a true expression of the Barbera variety. Produced in the Langhe, it features a distinct and vertical structure, supported by a juicy palate and lively acidity with well-integrated tannins. The bouquet releases aromas of red fruits, ripe cherry and wild strawberry, combined with floral hints and pronounced smoky nuances. On the palate, it reveals a clear savouriness and a marked mineral character derived from the terroir, ensuring a precise sip and an elegant finish.
Where it comes from
This red originates in the Langhe, in the Madonna di Como area near Alba, from the historic Bompè parcel. The vineyards are situated between 410 and 425 metres above sea level, on a hillside constantly exposed to the sun. The vines are cultivated using the Guyot system in a subcontinental climate with variable microclimates, ideal for optimal ripening. The soils, characterised by calcareous-marl, clay, stones and a high presence of white rock, impart the wine with its unmistakable mineral streak and support the natural savouriness of the grape variety.
How it is produced
The manual harvest takes place at the end of September, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement vats. The ten-day vinification at controlled temperature preserves the lively fruity expression of the grapes. This is followed by a year’s ageing in large lightly toasted French oak barrels, which enrich the bouquet with smoky notes while maintaining the varietal identity. This process ensures excellent structural balance, where aromatic intensity blends with a long and harmonious finish.
History and Curiosities
Bompè Langhe Barbera expresses the soul of a historic vineyard in Madonna di Como, cultivated organically on soil rich in white rock. Produced by Giacomo Borgogno e Figli, a historic winery founded in 1761, this red wine combines expertise and terroir. After manual harvesting, the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement vats, then matures in large French oak barrels. The result is a vertical wine with pronounced savouriness, a true reflection of the renowned oenological excellence of Piedmont.

The winery has some interesting records: in 1861, Barolo Borgogno sealed the pact for the birth of Italian unity, and in 1908, it was served to the Tsar of all Russia during a visit to Racconigi.
The turning point came in 1920, when Cesare Borgogno began exporting abroad. However his greatest insight came when he decided to "forget" half of the production of Barolo Riserva in order to sell it 20 years later, realising the great versatility and power of Nebbiolo.
Borgogno is synonymous with slowness: the winery chooses to take its time understanding things and doing them correctly. The vineyards are cared for and attended to with only organic products.
This has resulted in the winery to gain their first Biological harvest.
The decision to plant forest on eight of their 39 hectars is to protect the biodiversity of the Langa fauna from being decimated by the cultivation of vineyards.
Borgogno has a sense of history, tradition, and roots that blend with the innovation of the changing times. Read more
