Description

What kind of wine it is

Derthona by Borgogno is an organic white wine from Piedmont, an authentic expression of the Colli Tortonesi. Made from Timorasso grapes, it stands out for its layered aromatic profile. On the nose, it offers fruity aromas of pear and peach, intertwined with delicate floral notes of acacia and hawthorn, then evolving towards hints of honey and intriguing nuances of hydrocarbons. The palate is dry and enveloping, supported by vibrant freshness and a pronounced mineral drive. Its excellent ageing potential delivers a long and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the hills of Monleale, in the heart of the Colli Tortonesi. The vineyards are situated at around two hundred and fifty metres above sea level, benefiting from optimal south-west, south and east exposures. This position allows the bunches to ripen fully, while retaining a marked acidic tension. The roots delve into calcareous-silty soils, a factor that defines the typical mineral sensation and shapes the structure of the wine. This terroir offers excellent conditions for full-bodied whites with great longevity.

How it is produced

The grapes are hand-harvested at the end of September. This is followed by a cold maceration on the skins for three days and static decantation in steel. The must undergoes a spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement vats for twenty-five days. The process concludes with ageing in steel for ten months and a final rest in bottle for about seven months, resulting in a dry, balanced and enduring profile.

History and Curiosities

Derthona Timorasso by Giacomo Borgogno e Figli embodies a philosophy in which the grape variety enhances the essence of the Colli Tortonesi. This fine organic Timorasso is born from spontaneous fermentation in cement vats, completing its journey with careful maturation in steel and in the bottle, ensuring excellent evolution for up to ten years. The label, acclaimed by critics, demonstrates a profound respect for the environment, evident in the commitment to safeguarding local biodiversity through the care of the Monleale woodlands.

The name Borgogno is connected to one of the oldest wineries in Piedmont: in fact, in 1761 with Bartholomew Borgogno.

The winery has some interesting records: in 1861, Barolo Borgogno sealed the pact for the birth of Italian unity, and in 1908, it was served to the Tsar of all Russia during a visit to Racconigi.

The turning point came in 1920, when Cesare Borgogno began exporting abroad. However his greatest insight came when he decided to "forget" half of the production of Barolo Riserva in order to sell it 20 years later, realising the great versatility and power of Nebbiolo.

Borgogno is synonymous with slowness: the winery chooses to take its time understanding things and doing them correctly. The vineyards are cared for and attended to with only organic products.

This has resulted in the winery to gain their first Biological harvest.

The decision to plant forest on eight of their 39 hectars is to protect the biodiversity of the Langa fauna from being decimated by the  cultivation of vineyards.

Borgogno has a sense of history, tradition, and roots that blend with the innovation of the changing times.
