Description
What kind of wine is it
Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a sweet late harvest wine produced by Fritz Haag. Made from Riesling grapes, this wine reveals a noble style, where the richness of the sugar finds perfect balance in a fresh mineral tension. The bouquet opens with aromas of exotic fruit, offering clear notes of mirabelle plum, papaya and apricot. On the palate it is complex and persistent, with a measured sweetness that fades into a fine and deep finish. It is an expression designed for a very long evolution over time.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from the renowned Mosel region, in the historic Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard. This prestigious cru boasts a southern exposure and a concave shape that captures sunlight from various angles, ensuring the perfect ripening of the Riesling. The mild microclimate is influenced by the proximity of the river and the steep rocky slopes. The wine's identity derives from the soil rich in loose slate, capable of retaining heat. This geological matrix imparts an unmistakable mineral character and a refined structure to the aromatic profile.
How is it produced
The creation of this wine requires meticulous manual harvesting, carried out in multiple passes to carefully select individual berries. The aromatic concentration is the result of noble rot, which envelops the bunches, giving density and complexity. After vinification, the ageing process is managed to preserve the pure fragrance of the fruit. This label is also distinguished by being suitable for vegan consumption, offering an authentic taste that remains true to the vocation of the land.
History and Curiosities
This Riesling Auslese embodies the tradition of the Haag family. It originates from the grapes of the Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard, classified as VDP Grosse Lage. The meticulous manual harvest in several passes selects individual berries enriched by noble rot, offering an aromatic density of exotic fruit without ever being overpowering. The 2024 vintage is a vegan wine with a vibrant mineral profile, capable of evolving in the cellar until 2054.

After a stay at Mont du Toit in South Africa (the project was managed by Bernd Philippi and Bernhard Breuer) he joined the Wegeler family vineyard in Oestrich-Winkel. There, he ran the vineyard as manager for five years before returning to the Mosel in 2005, in order to take over as successor to the traditional vineyard of Fritz Haag.
Oliver Haag will continue the philosophy of his father, which is the production of fine, fruity, delicate Mosel Rieslings of unmistakable character. His father, Wilhelm Haag was born in 1937. In 1957 he interrupted his education abroad and returned home early because his father, Fritz was ill. He only planned to stay for the harvest but it developed into a life of winegrowing until the vineyard was handed over to the next generation.
With ambition and the knowledge that there were very large locations available, the philosophy also developed that the target can only be achieved through quality. Great vintages in 1959, 1964, 1969, 1971, 1976, 1983, 1985, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1994 followed, to mention but a few. His work and success proved him right: Wilhelm Haag was awarded "Winegrower of the year 1994" for his achievements. His success naturally reinforced that striving for quality and brought the vineyard an outstanding, worldwide reputation as a Riesling producer. Read more
