Description
What kind of wine it is
The St. Maddalena Classico by Franz Gojer is a still red wine from Alto Adige, an authentic expression of the Santa Maddalena area. This blend of Lagrein and Schiava reveals itself in the glass with a lively ruby red hue. On the nose, it offers a fragrant bouquet of fresh fruits, with clear hints of cherry, violet, and small red berries. On the palate, it is savoury and velvety, well balanced by elegant tannins that lead to a long and persistent finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the historic area of Santa Maddalena, located in the Bolzano region. The vineyards, trained on pergolas at around three hundred metres above sea level, benefit from a warm Mediterranean climate that is constantly ventilated. The vines sink their roots into soils composed of moraine deposits and decomposed porphyry. This particular sandy texture ensures excellent aeration and effectively retains heat. Such pedoclimatic conditions give the wine a distinct aromatic profile and a pleasant structural freshness.
How it is produced
Production begins with a careful manual harvest to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After gentle processing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature to enhance the fruity notes. This is followed by maturation in large wooden barrels, which is essential for imparting softness to the tannic structure. This versatile red pairs ideally with speck and poultry, and is surprisingly good even with grilled fish.
History and Curiosities
The St. Magdalener Classico by Franz Gojer, hand-harvested in 2024, expresses in the glass the deep-rooted winemaking tradition of Bolzano. The historic combination of Schiava and Lagrein grapes gives rise to a South Tyrol DOC red wine produced at an altitude of 300 metres, where the moraine and sandy soils provide the vines with ideal warmth. Fermentation in steel and maturation in large wooden barrels enhance its fresh aromas of cherry and violet, offering a velvety sip with elegant tannins and a long, persistent finish.
