Description
What kind of wine it is
The Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso FM Feudo di Mezzo Sottana is an organic red wine born on the slopes of Mount Etna, capable of expressing an elegant profile and a pronounced volcanic character. Made exclusively from Nerello Mascalese grapes, it offers a complex bouquet on the nose, dominated by fragrant notes of cherry and small red fruits. On the palate, it is harmonious, characterised by vibrant acidity and silky tannins that accompany the pleasant sweetness of ripe fruit towards a very persistent finish. It pairs beautifully with roast red meats, game, and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Contrada Feudo di Mezzo Sottana, in the territory of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. The roots of the old vines, some over forty years old, reach down to about 580 metres above sea level in deep volcanic soils. Frank Cornelissen manages the plots following the rhythms of nature and maintains very low yields to enhance aromatic concentration. The northern position and constant ventilation of the valley ensure perfect balance in the ripening of the Nerello Mascalese, giving the wine a marked territorial finesse.
How it is produced
The production process involves a gentle crushing of the bunches and fermentation started with a pied-de-cuve of only indigenous yeasts. The long maceration on the skins, lasting about fifty days, ensures a deep extraction that gives the wine structure without compromising its elegance. Vinification continues in buried terracotta jars and fibreglass tanks, materials chosen to preserve maximum organoleptic purity. A prolonged ageing of eighteen months, followed by a further rest of equal duration, consolidates the wine's gustatory harmony while avoiding invasive interventions.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 2001, Frank Cornelissen's winery has succeeded in enhancing the northern slope of Etna when this area was still little known. The Munjebel Rosso FM is produced in the Contrada Feudo di Mezzo Sottana, at an altitude of 580 metres. Here, majestic century-old vines sink their roots into deep volcanic soils, cultivated in harmony with natural and cosmic rhythms. Thanks to extremely low yields, the artisanal approach enhances the purity of Nerello Mascalese, giving the 2021 vintage a vibrant elegance.

Our farming philosophy is based on our acceptance of the fact that man will never be able to understand nature’s full complexity and interactions. We therefore choose to concentrate on observing and learning the movements of Mother Earth in her various energetic and cosmic passages and prefer to follow her indications as to what to do, instead of deciding and imposing ourselves.
