Description
What kind of wine it is
Fontanafredda’s Alta Langa is a Piedmontese sparkling wine made using the Traditional Method, created from a meticulous blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. It is characterised by a bright straw yellow colour with greenish highlights and offers a complex aromatic bouquet, featuring notes of honey, white peach, grapefruit and fresh hints of basil. On the palate, it stands out for its pleasant savouriness, accompanied by a very fine and persistent perlage. The structure, enriched by a creamy mousse, leads to a long and harmonious finish, making it ideal as an aperitif or throughout a meal.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown on the hills of the Langhe, in Piedmont, from vineyards situated between 250 and 500 metres above sea level. The optimal sun exposure ensures balanced ripening of the bunches. The vines take root in a terroir composed of white clays and layers of calcareous sands. This soil composition gives the wine a distinct mineral character, enhancing its natural savouriness and promoting the development of highly precise aromas.
How it is produced
Production begins with manual harvesting between late August and early September. After gentle pressing, the must ferments at a low temperature in stainless steel tanks. The wine rests on fine lees until spring, when the blend is created. The secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle according to the principles of the Traditional Method, followed by a slow ageing on the lees for at least thirty months. This prolonged maturation enriches the aromatic complexity and defines the wine’s flavour profile.
History and Curiosities
The 2021 vintage of this Alta Langa DOCG limited edition celebrates Fontanafredda's longstanding passion for Piedmontese sparkling wines. Born from a meticulous manual harvest, this elegant Metodo Classico combines Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes in equal parts. The skilful cuvée, created by selecting the finest crus, undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and then matures for at least 30 months on the lees in the estate's cool, silent cellars. This ageing imparts a savoury and enveloping structure to the glass.

Like all beautiful things, Fontanafredda originates from a love story between the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, and Rosa Vercellana.
Producers of Barolo and sumptuous wines of the Langhe, it was the scene of many firsts: they were the first Barolo to go overseas, the first to produce the first Classic Method in 1959, which was to be the forerunner of Alta Langa.
The founding principle of the winery is the concept of community.
Since 2018, Fontanafredda has been cultivating 120 organically certified hectares that are the setting for Italy's first Storytelling Village ('Villaggio Narrante'), which is still home to 12 families of workers who make the village an authentic village, alive and productive.
Fontanafredda is also hospitality, a meeting place where everyone is welcome thanks to its 4-star hospitality.
Today, the company preserves intact the testimonies of its noble past - the hunting lodge, the village, the extensive cellars, the vineyards - but continues to renew itself and experiment, perfecting what nature and history have handed down. For this reason, in the Langhe, where vines and wine bind generations to each other and shape the landscape, Fontanafredda is an essential reference point. The expression of a wine culture that comes from the earth, from the vineyard, and is refined through the work and creativity of people.
In 2021, the Alta Langa DOCG Contessa Rosa Rosé 2014 was named 'Best Sparkling Wine in the World' according to Tastingbook 2021.
In 2022 the BAROLO SERRALUNGA 2018 entered the TOP100 of WINE SPECTATOR in 78th place. Read more
