Description

What kind of wine it is

The Donna Franca Vino Liquoroso Marsala Superiore Riserva Semisecco Ambra by Florio is a fortified wine with a bright golden yellow colour, enhanced by deep amber highlights. Made from Grillo grapes, it stands out for its oxidative style which offers an enveloping sensory profile. On the nose, warm fruity notes of syrupy apricot, dates and spices emerge. On the palate, it is full, warm and has a smooth texture, enriched by subtle hints of vanilla leading to a long and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Sicily, along the coastal strip of Petrosino, where the influence of the sea constantly shapes the local microclimate. Mild winters and hot, dry summers characterise a region with siliceous, low-fertility soils rich in red earth, lying above a shallow water table. Florio's commitment in this area is reflected in a rigorous organic approach. The marine environment and controlled natural oxygenation are the key elements that define the identity of this intense Marsala.

How it is produced

After the vinification of the Grillo grapes, the production process relies on the Solera Method to develop extraordinary complexity. The lengthy ageing, which can range from fifteen to thirty years, takes place in partially filled barrels, encouraging a slow blend between different vintages. A final rest of at least six months allows for perfect stabilisation of the structure. Served at 10-12 °C, it pairs harmoniously with blue cheeses, structured starters and elaborate desserts, while also proving to be an excellent meditation wine.

History and Curiosities

Born in the historic Florio Cellars, founded in Sicily in 1833, Donna Franca is a true tribute to the great winemaking tradition. This exceptional Marsala Superiore Riserva acquires its elegance through the Solera method, maturing for between 15 and 30 years in partially filled barrels, enriched by the marine influence of Petrosino and by slow oxygenation. After six months of refinement in the bottle, this masterpiece in the oxidative style reveals a multi-award-winning profile, celebrated with 94 points from Robert Parker and the 5 Grappoli from Bibenda.

Founded by Vincenzo Florio in 1833 in Marsala, Western Sicily, the Florio Wine Cellars gaze out towards the sea. With grapes caressed by breezes and flavourful due to the proximity to the sea, the magnificent and silent Florio Wine Cellars house the oak barrels where the Marsala Florio wines age, seemingly motionless. Hundreds of barrels, vats and wooden kegs, each holding its own story, breathe the sea through the tuff-stone floor, in the high aisles where scents and architecture blend. This wonderful place is the theatre where the Sicilian idea of beauty is distilled, and our oenologist – through the wise use of space, time and oxygen – creates Marsala wine by slowly blending all its sensorial potentials.
