Description
What type of wine it is
Ferrari's Perlé Nero is a refined Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine from Trentino-Alto Adige, a pure expression of Pinot Noir crafted according to the rigorous principles of the Traditional Method. This Trentodoc with an Extra Brut dosage stands out for its dry profile and extremely fine perlage. The bouquet offers clear aromas of white fruit, vineyard peach and date, enriched by spicy hints and liquorice, while on the palate it is taut and energetic, supported by excellent acidity and a distinct savouriness. The citrusy freshness blends into an enveloping sip with a saline finish, a smoky touch and notes of almond, ideal for accompanying savoury cured meats or traditional bucatini alla carbonara.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the mountainous territory of Trento, the premier terroir for sparkling wine production in Trentino-Alto Adige. The clusters come from the high estates of Villa Margon, Maso Orsi and Maso Valli. This unique high-altitude origin ensures a significant diurnal temperature range and slow ripening, essential for preserving the integrity of the fruit and taste tension. The project embodies Giulio Ferrari's dream of creating a wine capable of competing with Champagne, a goal achieved after decades of agronomic research aimed at enhancing the aromatic precision of vines grown at altitude.
How it is produced
After manual harvesting, the Pinot Noir clusters undergo soft pressing. The first fermentation in stainless steel takes place without maceration on the skins, ensuring a perfectly clear must. The secondary fermentation follows the Traditional Method, developing complexity through a long ageing on the lees for at least sixty-six months. This prolonged rest gives the wine a creamy texture, while the Extra Brut dosage enhances the clarity of the taste, balancing the ripeness of the fruit and finishing with a defined and persistent verticality.
History and curiosities
The result of Giulio Ferrari's dream and forty years of research, Perlé Nero Riserva is the first and only Blanc de Noirs from the renowned winery, a bold expression of pure Pinot Nero. The grapes from the 2018 vintage, sourced from the mountain estates of Villa Margon, Maso Orsi and Maso Valli, benefit from careful ageing on the lees for at least 66 months. This majestic Trentodoc Extra Brut offers a sip of absolute elegance, recognised by the prestigious Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso and 92 points from Vinous.

A skilled and painstaking enologist who had studied at the prestigious School of Viticulture in Montpellier, Giulio created Ferrari in 1902, producing very few, extremely select bottles at a prohibitive price, but which were still never bought to satisfy the demand of wine lovers. In 1952 Bruno Lunelli, the owner of Trento’s best-known wine bar took over Ferrari from Giulio, who continued to work in the winery until his death. Then, thanks to meticulous labour in the winery and his innate entrepreneurial verve, Bruno Lunelli increased production until it reached a hundred thousand bottles a year. In the decades that followed, Bruno Lunelli’s sons, Gino, Franco and Mauro, brought the company, which produces exclusively Classic Method sparkling wines, to the apex of quality and fame - in other words, to the peak of excellence.
Today, as was the case in the past, the Lunelli family continues to be the lifeblood of the Ferrari brand. The third generation runs the company with respect for the past and clear ideas for the future.
Their goal is to preserve the prestige of the leading producer of the Classic Method sparkling wines in Italy and one of the top ten in the world. Whilst proudly maintaining the structure of a family-owned company, the Lunelli have conquered the market through business strategies that have made Ferrari into much more than just a successful brand. The company is a real international legend, producing the best of "Made in Italy". Read more
