Description
What kind of wine it is
Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore Extra Brut is an elegant sparkling wine produced using the Traditional Method by the Ferrari winery. Made from Chardonnay grapes, this prestigious sparkling wine from Trento stands out for its bright straw yellow colour with golden highlights and a fine, persistent perlage. On the nose, it reveals hints of acacia honey, citrus fruits and mature hay, combined with delicate floral notes, white chocolate and spices. On the palate, the velvety and defined structure leads to a sip with remarkable persistence.
Where it comes from
The origins of this excellence trace back to vineyards located in the mountains of Trento, in Trentino-Alto Adige. The grapes come from the historic Maso Pianizza vineyard, situated between 500 and 600 metres above sea level with optimal south-west exposure. In this environment, the vines benefit from an ideal microclimate to enhance the freshness and elegance that Chardonnay achieves at high altitude. The wine's identity is closely linked to Ferrari, a producer renowned for its rigorous interpretation of the region's strong winemaking vocation.
How it is produced
The production process follows the strict stages of the Traditional Method, with manual harvesting carried out around mid-September. The wine rests for about ten years on its own lees from in-house cultures; a very long maturation, crucial for broadening the aromatic spectrum and consolidating the flavour consistency. Finally, the Extra Brut dosage enhances the characteristics of the grape variety, offering a dry, vibrant and fully harmonious tasting experience.
History and Curiosities
Born in 1972, the Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore represents the pinnacle of the Metodo Classico. This masterpiece comes to life in the prestigious Maso Pianizza vineyard and matures for a full 10 years on the lees to achieve absolute elegance. The intuition of Giulio Ferrari in 1902, further developed thanks to the vision of the Lunelli family, has shaped an enduring legend. Now a symbol of prestige and awarded 96/100 by Decanter for the 2015 vintage, this noble excellence boasts a velvety body that releases complex aromas of mature hay and acacia honey.

A skilled and painstaking enologist who had studied at the prestigious School of Viticulture in Montpellier, Giulio created Ferrari in 1902, producing very few, extremely select bottles at a prohibitive price, but which were still never bought to satisfy the demand of wine lovers. In 1952 Bruno Lunelli, the owner of Trento’s best-known wine bar took over Ferrari from Giulio, who continued to work in the winery until his death. Then, thanks to meticulous labour in the winery and his innate entrepreneurial verve, Bruno Lunelli increased production until it reached a hundred thousand bottles a year. In the decades that followed, Bruno Lunelli’s sons, Gino, Franco and Mauro, brought the company, which produces exclusively Classic Method sparkling wines, to the apex of quality and fame - in other words, to the peak of excellence.
Today, as was the case in the past, the Lunelli family continues to be the lifeblood of the Ferrari brand. The third generation runs the company with respect for the past and clear ideas for the future.
Their goal is to preserve the prestige of the leading producer of the Classic Method sparkling wines in Italy and one of the top ten in the world. Whilst proudly maintaining the structure of a family-owned company, the Lunelli have conquered the market through business strategies that have made Ferrari into much more than just a successful brand. The company is a real international legend, producing the best of "Made in Italy". Read more
