Description
What kind of wine it is
Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano is a still red wine that represents the authentic expression of Le Pupille. Created from a blend of Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Alicante, it stands out for its bright ruby red colour. The bouquet opens with aromas of cherry, wild strawberry and violet, enriched by notes of blood orange, sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it offers a smooth and crisp sip, supported by fine tannins that lead to a long and persistent finish. After an hour of decanting, it is ideal paired with Tuscan ribollita, tomato-based pasta dishes or stuffed squid.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the estate’s vineyards located in Tuscany, between the areas of Magliano in Toscana and Istia d’Ombrone. The area stretches between 50 and 250 metres above sea level, benefiting from varied exposures that ensure optimal ripening. The roots delve into clay-silt and sandy-loam soils, enriched with marl limestone. This composition, typical of the Maremma, gives the Sangiovese a soft and juicy character. The vines maintain a balanced yield, which is essential for achieving a clean aromatic expression.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place in the first ten days of September, to capture the peak quality of the fresh fruit. In the winery, fermentation in stainless steel occurs at a controlled temperature of 24°C. During this stage, maceration on the skins lasts from ten to fifteen days, ensuring a balanced extraction of colour and tannic structure. The process concludes with a six-month maturation in steel tanks, a technical choice that preserves the fragrance and clarity of the Morellino di Scansano, resulting in a wine that is pleasant and immediately enjoyable to drink.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1978, Fattoria Le Pupille expresses the authentic Tuscan soul through its Morellino di Scansano DOCG, an iconic wine whose first historic vintage dates back to 1985. This label, awarded 93 points by James Suckling, offers an enveloping and smooth interpretation of Sangiovese. Careful ageing in steel preserves its fresh and juicy aromas of cherry, wild strawberry and sweet spices, ensuring a crisp sip. A red wine with a phenomenal quality-price ratio, capable of bringing the pure essence of the territory to the glass.
