Description
What kind of wine it is
The Morellino di Scansano by Fattoria dei Barbi is a still red wine that faithfully reflects the soul of the Tuscan region. This blend of Sangiovese and Merlot fits perfectly within the prestigious Morellino di Scansano designation, presenting in the glass with a bright ruby red colour enriched by lively purple highlights. On the nose, it offers clear aromas of small red fruits and ripe cherry, intertwined with hints of myrtle and delicate Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it reveals itself as a savoury and vibrant wine, well supported by a pleasant freshness and finely rounded tannins, finishing with elegant notes reminiscent of green tobacco. Its structure makes it ideal to pair with roast meats and mature cheeses whenever you seek an authentic sip.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the vineyards of the Tenuta Aquilaia, owned by Fattoria dei Barbi, located in the municipality of Scansano, in the heart of the evocative Maremma Toscana. The vines grow at around two hundred and fifty metres above sea level, benefiting from excellent sun exposure. The coastal climate ensures constant sunshine and ideal ventilation for the regular ripening of the grapes. The clay, limestone and stony soils impart a pronounced territorial character to the wine.
How it is produced
In the winery, the freshly harvested grapes are carefully destemmed, crushed and sent for alcoholic fermentation. This process takes place at a controlled temperature and lasts for about twelve or thirteen days, accompanied by maceration designed to optimise the extraction of aromas and colour. This is followed by six months of ageing, divided between stainless steel tanks and maturation in oak barrels. This precise management of maturation times and materials results in a red wine with a warm and satisfying sip, perfectly balanced between fresh verve and roundness on the palate.
History and Curiosities
The Morellino di Scansano DOCG 2022 embodies the authenticity of the Tuscan Maremma and comes from the Aquilaia Estate of the Fattoria dei Barbi, an establishment with a centuries-old tradition dating back to 1352. The fine grapes, grown at an altitude of 250 metres and influenced by the coastal climate, are vinified at a controlled temperature and matured for six months in steel and oak barrels. This meticulous process gives rise to a red wine with a fascinating potential for ageing of up to ten years, ready to delight the senses with its rounded tannins and vibrant freshness.

The Fattoria dei Barbi today is owned by Stefano Cinelli Colombini, who continues a story that sees the Colombinis linked to these lands for more than six centuries; a very long time in which the family has always defended the traditions and values of the Montalcinese culture, whose last and most precious fruit is Brunello.
