Description
What kind of wine it is
Alsace Gentil by Famille Hugel is a dry white wine with Alsace designation that expresses the aromatic soul of the region. Fermented at a controlled temperature, this blend skilfully combines Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Muscat. It appears a bright yellow with greenish highlights. The bouquet is rich in green apple, pear, lychee and passion fruit, enhanced by hints of rose and spices. On the palate, it offers extraordinary drinkability, revealing a smooth sip supported by a lively acidic freshness. The finish is elegant, enlivened by delicate aromatic nuances.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the vineyards of Riquewihr, in Alsace, at the foot of the Vosges. The vines, around thirty years old, grow on clay-limestone soils that give the wine great balance. The cool climate ensures a long growing season, with a warm August accelerating ripening and favouring well-defined aromatic profiles. The name chosen for this label recalls the local custom of combining a rigorous selection of the best varieties in the area, to deliver a faithful expression of the territory in the glass.
How it is produced
The manual harvest allows for the selection of bunches, which are then pressed by gravity without the use of pumps. The must begins fermentation at a controlled temperature in special tanks. After spontaneous clarification during the winter and a light filtration, the wine rests for the final ageing in the cellar. The minimally invasive processes deeply respect the integrity of the fruit; therefore, the possible formation of slight tartrate crystals is a natural indicator of authenticity.
History and Curiosities
Born in Riquewihr, this wine revives the tradition of blending noble grape varieties in a renowned cuvée called Gentil. Produced by the historic Famille Hugel, active since 1639, it represents the only AOC Alsace blend from the winery, conceived as the ideal introduction to Alsatian whites. The grapes, hand-picked from vineyards with clay-limestone soil, give rise to a label awarded 89 points by Vinous for the 2024 vintage. After bottling, the wine matures patiently in the cellar, offering a sip that fully expresses the authentic charm of the terroir.

In 1639, he was made an honorary town citizen and soon took charge of the powerful winegrowers' guild.
In 1672, his son built a beautiful house in the Rue des Cordiers, and above the door was carved the family coat of arms, which was the origin of the company logo still in use today.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family earned an enviable reputation for their wine-making skills and the particular way they cultivated their vineyards. Then, in 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel settled on the premises in the centre of Riquewihr.
After 1918, many far-sighted and courageous winegrowers, including Frédéric Emile Hugel, took steps to save the Alsace vineyards. This true pioneer dedicated his entire life to promoting high-quality wines from noble grape varieties. His son Jean continued this crusade. With his perseverance and hard work, he proved that Alsace wines deserved their place among the best wines in the world.
His three sons, Georges, Jean and André, gained official recognition for Alsace 'Vendange Tardive' and 'Sélection de Grains Nobles' wines. Read more
