Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté by Elio Grasso is a structured red, a true expression of the Barolo denomination. Made from Nebbiolo grapes, it reveals a bright garnet colour in the glass. On the nose, captivating saline notes and medicinal herbs emerge, combined with deep hints of ripe plum, crisp cherry and light balsamic nuances. The palate is enveloping and silky, unfolding slowly to reveal an intact texture supported by polished tannins. This pure interpretation of the grape culminates in a long and savoury finish, achieving complete gustatory harmony after adequate decanting time.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, a region of undisputed prestige. The vineyards, perfectly south-facing, are situated at an altitude between three hundred and three hundred and fifty metres. The vines, with an average age of forty years, grow on medium-textured calcareous soils with a marked clay component. The underground alternation of marl and stratified sands imparts the wine with its renowned structure and a distinct mineral precision. Elio Grasso’s meticulous work enhances the hillside slopes, allowing Nebbiolo to faithfully interpret this renowned Piedmontese terroir.
How it is produced
The production process begins in autumn with the rigorous manual harvesting of the best bunches. In the cellar, alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with daily pump-overs to optimise aroma extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes the delicate maturation phase. Patient ageing in Slavonian oak barrels defines the character of the wine, which matures for at least thirty-eight months in total, eighteen of which are spent in contact with wood. After bottling, a further eight to ten months’ rest in glass allows the wine to achieve its final aromatic complexity.
History and Curiosities
In the heart of the Langhe, Barolo DOCG Ginestra Casa Maté® embodies the excellence of a tradition that dates back to the nineteenth century. Produced in Monforte d’Alba by Azienda Agricola Elio Grasso, this noble Nebbiolo first saw the light of day with its inaugural vintage in 1978. The grapes ripen on south-facing slopes, in a region protected by UNESCO and characterised by calcareous-clay soils. The expert ageing in Slavonian oak barrels enhances the essence of these Piedmontese hills, giving rise to a wine of timeless charm.

In the early 1980s we decided to go back to our origins as grape growers, well aware that our work did not stop at the end of the row of vines. We had no illusions that we were inventing anything: we merely wanted to comply with the best in the traditions and work of our predecessors, without any preconceived ideas. The first logical consequence was the decision, from 1978, to vinify and bottle separately grapes from our various vineyards. Read more
