Description
What kind of wine it is
BRDA Cru Selection Merlot is a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of Merlot in the Slovenian region. It appears a ruby red colour, revealing clear aromas of dark forest fruits. On the palate, it unveils an elegant structure and a pleasant freshness, leading to a harmonious development and a persistent finish. Excellent if decanted for an hour, it pairs superbly with beef, lamb and game dishes, and also enhances rich first courses, cured meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine is born in the heart of the Brda region, reflecting the organic and ecological approach of the Marjan Simcic winery. The vineyards selected for the Cru Selection line boast vines over twenty years old, rooted in the typical calcareous-marl soils of the area. The presence of opoka, the characteristic local geological formation, gives the sip a distinct mineral imprint. This combination of soil and climate guarantees the wine a solid structural texture and an excellent capacity for long ageing over time.
How it is produced
Vinification begins with a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, with a twenty-one day maceration on the skins. Gentle pressing allows the separation of the pomace while preserving the aromatic purity of the must. Maturation continues for forty-two months in French oak barrels, followed by a further refinement in bottle for at least six months. This meticulous process gives the wine its balanced complexity.
History and Curiosities
Produced in Slovenia, in the renowned Brda terroir, the Merlot Cru Selection 2020 highlights the centuries-old dedication of the Marjan Simčič winery, founded in 1860. This elegant red is born from family-owned vineyards managed organically, with vines aged between 21 and 26 years. The meticulous process involves spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and twenty-one days of maceration, followed by 42 months of ageing in 225-litre barriques. Awarded 93 points by James Suckling, this label offers a harmonious and memorable tasting experience.
