Description

What kind of wine it is

The BRDA Classic Chardonnay produced by Marjan Simcic is a quality white wine from the Brda region, vinified in steel. In the glass, Chardonnay releases an inviting bouquet of ripe apple, white peach, lemon and balsamic herbs. On the palate, it is dry and harmonious, offering a creamy texture with hints of pineapple and dried fruit that lead to a persistent finish. Its balance makes it ideal for pairing with fish dishes, white meats and recipes from modern vegetarian cuisine.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the plots of Gredič, Ceglo and Jordano, located within the Brda region in Slovenia. The vines, cultivated between 150 and 250 metres above sea level, benefit from south-west and south-east exposures that ensure optimal ripening of the fruit. The soil is characterised by the presence of opoka, a complex composition of marl, slate and sandstone with a calcareous-marl base. This particular geological structure gives the wine a mineral and dry character, faithfully enhancing the authentic vocation of the Slovenian terroir as interpreted by Marjan Simcic.

How it is produced

Production begins in mid-September with a manual harvest of the grapes. In the winery, the bunches undergo a skin maceration of about twenty-four hours to encourage natural aromatic extraction. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in steel containers thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts. The wine gains volume and structure by resting for six months in steel tanks in contact with its own lees. The process is completed by bottle ageing of at least one month, an essential step to stabilise the freshness and harmony of the sip.

History and Curiosities

Domaine Marjan Simčič continues an ancient family tradition dating back to 1860, now in its fifth generation. For over a century and a half, the estate has cultivated its own plots in the Brda region of Slovenia, working with the aim of enhancing the authentic identity of the local terroir.

  • Start up year: 2008
  • Oenologist: Marjan Simčič
  • Hectares: 18
The year 2008 was a milestone for Simčič winery - Marjan, representing the fifth generation of winemakers, since in 1860 Jožef Simčič bought first pieces of Brda land and planted the oldest vineyards, becomes the pillar of the winemaking from all points of view.
Marjan`s story, which was told and implemented through his wines in the past 20 years, in the year 2008 was brought to such perfection to present to public the result of his devotion - a new line of top quality wines ''Opoka''.
Along the wines’ structure we can follow the intertwining of long-lasting winemaker’s experience, signature of his character and all the best offered by the Brda terroir. In Brda jargon Opoka means marl of aeolian sediment very poor in organic structure, whereas very rich with mineral salts.
