Description

What kind of wine it is

Domaine Jean Michel Welty Riesling Les Terrasses is an organic white wine, still and semi-aromatic, offering a balanced interpretation of its terroir. On the nose, it presents a fresh and lively profile, characterised by fragrant citrus notes. The authentic expression of the Riesling grape emerges on the palate with excellent ripeness, revealing a full sip and a firm structure. The wine's natural acidity outlines a linear profile that enhances its nuances with great precision.

Where it comes from

This wine is produced in France, in the renowned region of Alsace, by a family of winegrowers who have been cultivating vines since 1738. Jean Michel Welty's production philosophy is closely linked to the Bollenberg terroir, a dry heath considered a unique ecosystem in Europe, capable of profoundly influencing the character of the grapes. This distinctive environment gives the bunches an intense aromatic purity and a pronounced acidic tension.

How it is produced

The entire production process strictly follows the principles of organic farming. The vinification of the Riesling grapes aims to preserve their integrity and freshness, maintaining a savoury and vibrant character. The meticulous work in the cellar allows for a wine with an ageing potential estimated between three and five years. It pairs ideally with fish dishes, seafood, poultry and cheeses, expressing its elegance at a temperature of 10-12 °C.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1738 in Alsace, Domaine Jean Michel Welty boasts a winemaking tradition passed down through eight generations. Jean-Michel, a proud independent winemaker, has expanded the vineyards by introducing organic cultivation, now complemented by the creativity and methods of his son Jérémy. The distinctive identity of this Riesling originates from the Bollenberg terroir, a unique arid heathland in Europe that shapes the very essence of the grapes. Each vintage encapsulates decades of family passion and a deep respect for sustainable practices.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1738
It was in 1738 that Mr Welty planted his first vines on the hills of the Bollenberg - arid moorland unique in Europe.

Eight generations later, we are continuing this wonderful family story, which links us so closely to the land, the vines and the wine, with the same faith and the same enthusiasm.

Every day, our work is guided by the conviction that nature will give us back what we have given her.

It's been over thirty-five years since Jean-Michel took up the torch left by his father Fernand, gradually doubling the surface area of the vineyard.

In September 2012, he was joined by his son Jérémy, who brought a breath of fresh air to the estate with new creations and a new method of cultivation: Organic Farming.
