Description

What kind of wine it is

Domaine J-M Stephan Cote Rotie So Brune is a still red wine that precisely expresses the character of Côte Rôtie. In the glass, it reveals an intense ruby red colour, heralding a structured and harmonious sensory profile. The bouquet stands out for its clear fruity aromas, elegantly interwoven with fresh notes of menthol and lavender. On the palate, it is enveloping, supported by a weave of extremely fine tannins that provide great balance and drinking pleasure, allowing a clear interpretation of its style to emerge.

Where it comes from

This wine expression originates in Tupin-et-Semons, in the heart of the renowned Rhône Valley in France. Côte Rôtie denotes a well-defined origin, capable of imparting a coherent and recognisable stylistic imprint to the glass. The area's pedoclimatic environment allows the wine to maintain a profile that favours gustatory balance and perfect aromatic clarity. The measured structure enhances the bouquet without ever becoming heavy, offering a faithful interpretation of the French terroir.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a carbonic maceration of the grape bunches, followed by fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel vats, a technique chosen to preserve the integrity and purity of the fruit. Subsequently, the wine matures for twelve months in barrels, an essential stage to complete the flavour profile and smooth the tannic texture. To fully appreciate the nuances and overall harmony of this wine, it is recommended to decant for about an hour before serving.

Jean-Michel Stephan is an independent spirit of the Côte-Rôtie. He studied in Belleville, in Beaujolais and took his first steps in 1991, spurred on by his passion for biology and plants. The most extensive property is 1.5 ha on the Coteau de Bassenon. It is a slope of 40 °, with lots of terraces carved into soft granite or beola. The upper part is from 1987; the low part, of 0.87 ha goes from 1896 to 1902 and this part is used in the cuvée "Vieille Vigne en Coteaux" when the vintage is level. His other sites are Tupin (1965), Coteaux de Tupin (1980), and a tiny plot of 0.3 ha at Verenay (1992). At present, its vineyard is about 60% clone massal, 30% Serrine, and 10% Viognier. Read more
