Description

What kind of wine it is

Mercurey Les Montots by Domaine de Villaine is an organic red wine that expresses the most authentic character of Pinot Noir. In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby colour, accompanied by an aromatic bouquet of red fruits and stone fruit. On the palate, it displays a broad profile, where the juicy texture merges with firm tannins that are smoothed by a discreet use of oak. A vibrant acidity brings tension, leading the tasting towards a clear mineral finish with a pleasant persistence.

Where it comes from

This expression originates in Mercurey, Burgundy. The grapes come from the Les Montots vineyard, situated on a steep, south-facing slope, an ideal position to ensure even ripening. Moderate yields encourage the development of concentrated material and enhance the brightness of the fruit. The Pinot Noir vines derive from selections from Nuits-Saint-Georges, chosen for their pronounced aromatic qualities, which give the wine a distinctive and deeply territorial olfactory identity.

How it is produced

The vinification involves the use of a significant proportion of whole bunches, a technique that defines the aromatic precision and enriches the tannic texture of the Pinot Noir. Afterwards, the slow maturation in barrel shapes a vigorous structure, allowing the oak to integrate perfectly and enhance the purity of the raw material. This meticulous process lays the foundation for a marked ageing potential, offering a glass destined to evolve over time. It pairs ideally with red meat or game dishes.

History and Curiosities

The Mercurey Les Montots 2023 from Domaine de Villaine is a refined organic Pinot Noir produced from vines originally from Nuits-Saint-Georges, renowned for their pronounced aromatic qualities. Cultivation on a south-facing slope in Burgundy ensures limited yields. Thanks to vinification with 60% whole bunches and a slow maturation in barrel, this still red expresses an intense aromatic profile. Its vigorous structure guarantees excellent longevity, with the potential to evolve for up to twenty years.

From this winery
Domaine de Villaine is located in Bouzeron, nestled in the Côte Chalonnaise region between Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay to the north and Rully and Mercurey to the south. Planted with vines by the monks of Cluny in the Middle Ages, this small, sunny valley has a rich and lengthy tradition of producing quality wines which reflect their exceptional terroir.

Here, vines are grown exclusively on the slopes : the nutrient-poor, limestone-rich soil allows precise yield control, while a warm microclimate favors ripening of the grapes.
