Description
What kind of wine it is
This organic Chianti Classico Riserva from Dievole is crafted from a meticulous blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero and Colorino. It displays an intense ruby red colour, enhanced by bright garnet highlights. On the nose, pronounced aromas of ripe red fruit emerge, accompanied by enveloping spicy notes. On the palate, it reveals a full body, supported by pleasant acidity and marked minerality. The elegant tannic structure leads to a long and very persistent finish. If allowed to decant, it pairs beautifully with red meats, game, pork and mature cheeses, with an ideal serving temperature between 16 and 18°C.
Where it comes from
The grapes are sourced from the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of the Sienese region. The vines, with excellent south and south-west exposure, are trained using a spurred cordon system transitioning to Guyot. The wine’s firm and defined profile is the result of the silty-clay soils, rich in marl, limestone and abundant stones. This specific geology imparts a distinct mineral character and ensures balanced yields, reflecting the vocation of a region capable of producing grapes with remarkable aromatic and flavour expression.
How it is produced
Harvesting begins in the first days of October. Fermentation in raw cement, at a controlled temperature, lasts about two weeks to preserve the aromatic integrity of the grape varieties. Afterwards, the wine matures for seventeen months in untoasted French oak barrels, a process that smooths the tannins, making them soft and balanced. The process concludes with a maturation period of at least six months. This meticulous craftsmanship results in a harmonious sip, where freshness, spicy notes and persistence coexist with great naturalness.
History and Curiosities
The Novecento Chianti Classico Riserva celebrates nine centuries of Dievole's history, whose winemaking origins have been documented since 1090. This refined organic red wine made from Sangiovese was created to honour an ancient lease agreement drawn up in the Tuscan “divine valley”. The 2021 vintage matures slowly in French oak barrels, developing an intoxicating bouquet of ripe red fruits and spicy notes. On the palate, it offers a pronounced minerality, a perfectly balanced body and elegant tannins.

The name Dievole first officially appeared in the 11th century, on 10 May 1090, to be precise. In those years, the Icelandic Leif Erikson discovered North America, the Chinese people discovered gunpowder, Bologna opened the world's first university, ,the Normans invaded Rome and Pope Urban II conquered Jerusalem. On that day, we read in the contract of the notary Bellundo that two capons, three loaves and six 'coins of Lucca' of good silver were paid for the annual rent of a vineyard in the divine valley at Dievole, precisely.
In 2012 Dievole began a harmonious and gradual renovation aimed at bringing out the deepest identity of these places. Yesterday's dreams become tomorrow's goals, and ancient certainties are confronted with new ideas. It is an evolution that started from listening to the land and has a common thread: quality.
There are three expressions of Dievole: its vineyards that draw waves on the hillsides, the olive trees that punctuate the landscape with their timeless charm and the warm welcome of the historic Villa - Villa Dievole - an elegant resort where people can experience unforgettable moments.
Petrignano 2019 has been awarded Rosso d'Italia 2023 according to Gambero Rosso. It represents an ambitious project by Dievole, enhancing Sangiovese grapes from individual vineyards in the different nuances of Chianti Classico region. Read more
