Description

What kind of wine it is

De Loach Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a still red wine that embodies the pure essence of the Pinot Noir grape variety. Characterised by a vivid ruby colour, it reveals distinct aromas of red fruits, star anise and delicate earthy notes of shiitake mushroom. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, standing out for its soft, velvety and enveloping texture. The light tannins blend with perfectly balanced acidity, enhancing clear flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry, orange zest and cloves, finishing with a refreshing and expressive aftertaste.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the Russian River Valley, a renowned wine-growing area in Sonoma County, California. The grapes are carefully selected from four dedicated plots, chosen to convey the authentic characteristics of the region into the glass. The De Loach winery adopts strict sustainable practices, operating according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, in close collaboration with growers who respect local ecosystems. The deep connection with the Californian soil gives the wine a pronounced aromatic elegance and a distinctive regional identity.

How it is produced

The winemaking process involves manual fermentation in small containers, an artisanal technique ideal for preserving the primary aromas of the grapes. The subsequent ageing continues for ten months in French oak barrels, enriching the flavour profile with gentle hints of toasted hazelnut and smoky vanilla, without ever overpowering the fruit. Capable of evolving in the bottle for five to ten years, this red wine is notable for its strong gastronomic vocation. It pairs perfectly with dishes based on duck, game, pork and cheese. For optimal tasting, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.

History and Curiosities

The De Loach Russian River Valley Pinot Noir embodies Californian excellence through rigorous sustainable farming practices. The grapes, sourced from four renowned plots in Sonoma County, are enhanced by artisanal fermentation in small containers. Afterwards, the wine matures for 10 months in French oak barriques, developing elegant nuances and a velvety smoothness. This meticulous care gives the red wine remarkable longevity, ensuring an excellent ageing potential of up to ten years.

From this winery
As a pioneering producer and winegrower of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, DeLoach Vineyards has been experimenting with and perfecting the best combinations of soil, rootstock and clones for over four decades. In 2003, the Boisset family brought two generations of sustainable winemaking experience from Burgundy, France to California’s Russian River Valley and started transitioning the 17-acre estate vineyard to organic and Biodynamic farming, creating by pulling up the vines and planting cover crops to revitalize the soil. During the replanting, DeLoach partnered with winegrowers equally dedicated to and passionate about eco-friendly farming practices and producing high-quality wines — relationships that continue today.

When this Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Zinfandel Great were purchased by the scion of a prominent French wine company, the focus of the operation became less "mainstream," not more. Like Benziger, Deloach celebrates its organic and Biodynamic certified status and encourages visitors to learn more in its garden experience and tasting flights.

Owners Suzanne Hagins and Chris Condos are so committed to making wine only from certified organic grapes, they say so right on the label! It’s not as common as you might think. Both career winemakers, this husband and wife team have managed to put together a little garden oasis amid the apple trees of Sebastopol. They also pour organic cider, with wine fresh from the tap at their stylish tasting room. Look for their new certified organic wine, too — which means no sulfites added — when it’s available, as well as a Biodynamic wine or two.
