Description
What type of wine it is
Cottanera's Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, capable of reflecting the authentic character of the volcanic slope. It is distinguished by a ruby red colour with garnet reflections and a floral olfactory profile of dog rose, violet and orange zest, enriched by hints of eucalyptus on a distinct graphite base. On the palate, it presents a significant structure with a decisive freshness and dense, austere yet elegant tannins. The persistent finish makes it ideal for pairing with mushroom pasta dishes, meat sauces and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Castiglione di Sicilia, in the famous Feudo di Mezzo area, within the Contrada Diciassettesalme. The vineyards are cultivated between 750 and 770 metres above sea level following sustainable practices. The high-altitude climate and the deep lava soil impart a recognisable mineral mark to the bunches. The vines, approximately thirty years old and trained using the spurred cordon method, guarantee limited yields and a balanced maturation, concentrating the complex identity of the territory in the fruit.
How it is produced
Production begins in October with a rigorous manual harvest. After destemming, fermentation at a controlled temperature proceeds with frequent pump-overs and punch-downs, accompanied by maceration on the skins for about thirty days for optimal extraction of colour and polyphenols. The wine completes malolactic fermentation and matures in French oak barrels for a period of fourteen to sixteen months. A further ageing of eighteen months follows to integrate the tannic component and ensure great ageing potential.
