Description

What kind of wine it is

Les Pagodes de Cos is a still red wine that clearly expresses the elegance of the Bordeaux region. The result of a careful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it combines a solid structure with a pleasant freshness. On the nose, it opens with aromas of red fruits, intertwined with delicate notes of eucalyptus and spices. The palate is dense and well-balanced, with a medium-full body where silky tannins caress the palate, supporting an enveloping texture. The sip leads to a persistent finish, characterised by a pronounced savoury and mineral imprint.

Where it comes from

The roots of this wine lie in Saint-Estèphe, renowned for its reds with great ageing potential in the heart of the Médoc. Created as the second wine of the renowned Cos d’Estournel estate, it owes its name to the iconic pagoda-style architecture that distinguishes the property. The mature vines grow on an exceptional terroir, ensuring an authentic and profound expression of the fruit. Thanks to a measured agricultural yield, the grapes offer a compact gustatory texture. The unique characteristics of the soil give the wine its typical chalky accents and a clear saline nuance on the finish.

How it is produced

Every stage of production is aimed at preserving the integrity and finesse of the fruit. After harvesting, the grapes are processed using gravity-fed vinification, a technique that avoids mechanical pumping to protect the aromatic profile of the musts. Subsequently, the wine matures in oak barrels, a choice that refines the tannic texture and elegantly integrates the spicy nuances. This ageing process enhances the juiciness of the fruit, delivering a structured and complex profile, where density meets freshness in perfect harmony.

History and Curiosities

The story of this fascinating Bordeaux second wine begins in 1811 with the Marquis d’Estournel, whose vision brought the estate’s excellence as far as India. Created to celebrate the iconic pagodas of the château, the label inherits all the allure of a prestigious Second Cru from 1855. Under the guidance of Michel Reybier, tradition meets innovation: a modern gravity-flow winery handles the harvest with utmost delicacy to enhance the vibrant purity of a sublime Merlot-dominant blend.
