Description
What kind of wine it is
Contini Vernaccia di Oristano Flor is a still white wine that elegantly expresses the Sardinian oxidative style. Made from Vernaccia di Oristano grapes, it displays a golden colour with amber highlights. The bouquet is ethereal and broad, with notes of toasted hazelnut and blossoming almond. On the palate, it offers a dry and full structure, warm and velvety. The taste reveals a pleasantly tangy and slightly bitter undertone, finishing with a very persistent finish that makes it a perfect meditation wine to pair with bottarga and blue cheeses.
Where it comes from
The wine originates in Sardinia, between the Lower Tirso Valley and the Sinis, just a few metres above sea level. The vines benefit from a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, breezy summers. The roots explore alluvial soils, characterised by a sandy matrix and light clay veins. These natural conditions favour the development of a dry and structured profile, essential for enhancing the unique ageing process of Vernaccia di Oristano.
How it is produced
The process begins with gentle pressing and fermentation at a controlled temperature. Maturation takes place in oak and chestnut barrels that are deliberately left partially empty. This approach allows the formation of the flor yeast veil, triggering a complex oxidative maturation using the solera method. After about four years resting in wood, the wine acquires its ethereal depth. A final refinement in glass stabilises and completes the harmony of this fascinating white.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1898, Contini is the oldest winery in Sardinia and preserves its heritage with exceptional oenological masterpieces. Vernaccia di Oristano DOC was the island’s first historic denomination, and Flor 2021 masterfully interprets its classic style. The wine is born from a complex oxidative maturation in partially filled small barrels, where a natural layer of yeast enriches it with ethereal aromas of almond blossom. This fascinating process gives rise to a warm and velvety white wine, deservedly awarded the Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso.
