Description
What kind of wine it is
Conte Vistarino Pinot Nero Oltrepo Pavese Pernice is a still red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes, a true expression of Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Noir. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour enriched with garnet highlights. The bouquet is broad and complex, with elegant hints of violet and small red fruits intertwined with notes of roasted coffee and cocoa. On the palate, it reveals a complete nose-palate correspondence, confirming a refined body and the integrity of the fruit. The pronounced minerality combines with well-defined and harmonious tannins, supporting an austere structure through to the long, pleasantly spicy finish.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Cascina Pernice cru, a benchmark vineyard for the study of Pinot Noir within the Conte Vistarino estate. The vines grow at around three hundred metres above sea level in the areas of Rocca de’ Giorgi and Pietra de’ Giorgi. The limestone and clay soils, enriched with sand and gravel, give the wine a natural minerality and excellent ageing potential. The winery has been operating since 1674, maintaining a deep historical connection with this grape variety, introduced to Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. The agronomic management is aimed at enhancing the natural vocation of the Lombard terroir.
How it is produced
The grapes are selected from vineyards managed with low yields per hectare to ensure the highest quality. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in truncated wooden vats, followed in spring by malolactic fermentation carried out in barrels. Aged in French barrels for one year, the wine develops a complex tannic structure and enriches its aromatic spectrum. This is followed by a crucial rest in bottle for at least twelve months, which consolidates the wine’s architecture and defines its distinctive spicy notes.
History and Curiosities
Active in the Oltrepò Pavese since 1674, the historic Conte Vistarino estate has tied its destiny to Pinot Noir, a grape variety introduced to Italy in 1850. From the renowned cru Cascina Pernice comes an elegant red wine that combines proud tradition with great fruit integrity. The 2020 vintage, awarded 5 Bibenda bunches and 4 Vines from the Vitae AIS guide, matures in French barriques, developing a long, spicy finish. This fascinating family story, which spans 200 hectares, offers an excellence with centuries-old charm and perfect taste harmony.

Carlo Giorgi di Vistarino introduced the pinot nero grape to the Oltrepo Pavese between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, going on to win awards in both London and Paris for the sparkling wines thus produced. His work was taken further by Ottaviano and Carlo, and is today in the hands of Ottavia Giorgi di Vistarino.
