Description
What kind of wine it is
The Pinot Bianco Berg Riserva from Colterenzio is a refined still white wine made from Pinot Bianco grapes. In the glass, it displays a brilliant straw yellow hue enriched with greenish highlights, heralding a complex and fragrant bouquet where notes of apple, pear, floral hints and citrus nuances emerge. On the palate, it reveals a pronounced acidity and a distinct savoury and mineral character, which unfolds into a long-lasting finish. A prestigious expression of Alto Adige Riserva, perfect for pairing with raw seafood, sushi and delicate white meats.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the historic micro-area of Eppan Berg, located at the foot of the Mendola. The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 450 and 500 metres, in a terroir ideally suited to this variety. The soils are characterised by a moraine formation rich in limestone deposits, silt and clay, a pedological composition that imparts a distinctive saline imprint to the wine. Colterenzio works these lands with the aim of enhancing their territorial characteristics with utmost consistency and precision.
How it is produced
Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in wooden barrels. The wine then undergoes maturation on fine lees for ten months, partly in wood to enrich the structure without overpowering the fruit's fragrance. The blend is then created, which rests for a few months before being released to the market. This careful production process gives the wine a balanced structure, able to combine freshness and a delicate contribution from the wood in a harmonious and persistent finish.
History and Curiosities
The Pinot Bianco Berg Riserva from Colterenzio celebrates the legacy of 26 winegrowers united since 1960. The grapes come from Eppan Berg, a terroir situated at 500 metres above sea level with morainic soils. Thanks to expert fermentation in wood and ten months of ageing on fine lees, this Pinot Bianco Riserva expresses a complex bouquet, with notes of crisp apple and delicate floral hints. On the palate, it reveals a perfect balance between elegant structure and pronounced acidity, finishing with a persistent mineral finish that enhances every sip.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
